  1. 1All of Israel came together to meet David at Hebron. They told him, "We are your own flesh and blood."
  2. 2Even when Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel in and out. And the LORD your God said to you, 'You will shepherd my people Israel and be their ruler.'
  3. 3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them there in the LORD's presence. They anointed David as king over Israel, just as the LORD had promised through Samuel.
  4. 4David and all Israel then marched to Jerusalem — also known as Jebus — where the Jebusites still lived.
  5. 5The people of Jebus said to David, "You will not come in here." But David captured the fortress of Zion, which is the city of David.
  6. 6David said, "Whoever strikes the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain." Joab, the son of Zeruiah, went up first and became chief.
  7. 7David made the fortress his home, and that's why it was called the city of David.
  8. 8He built the city all around, starting from the Millo, while Joab repaired the rest of the city.
  9. 9David grew more and more powerful, because the LORD of hosts was with him.
  10. 10These are the leaders of David's mighty warriors — men who fought alongside him and all Israel to establish his kingdom, just as the LORD had spoken concerning Israel.
  11. 11Here is the roster of David's mighty warriors: Jashobeam, a Hachmonite, was the chief of the captains. He once raised his spear against 300 men and killed them all at one time.
  12. 12Next was Eleazar son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the 3 greatest warriors.
  13. 13He was with David at Pasdammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. There was a field full of barley, and the Israelite troops fled from the Philistines.
  14. 14They took their stand in the middle of that field, defended it, and struck down the Philistines. The LORD saved them with a great deliverance.
  15. 15Three of the thirty captains went down to the rock where David was, at the cave of Adullam, while the Philistine army was camped in the valley of Rephaim.
  16. 16David was in his stronghold at the time, and a Philistine garrison occupied Bethlehem.
  17. 17David longed and said, "If only someone would bring me a drink of water from the well by the gate of Bethlehem!"
  18. 18So the 3 warriors broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well by the gate of Bethlehem, and carried it back to David. But David refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out as an offering to the LORD,
  19. 19saying, "My God forbid that I should drink this! Should I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives to bring it?" Because they had put their lives on the line to get it, he wouldn't drink it. These were the kinds of things the 3 mightiest warriors did.
  20. 20Abishai, Joab's brother, was chief of the three. He once raised his spear against 300 men and killed them, earning a reputation among the three.
  21. 21He was the most honored of the 3 and became their captain, but he didn't rank among the top 3 warriors.
  22. 22Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was a brave warrior from Kabzeel who performed many heroic deeds. He killed two lionlike men of Moab. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.
  23. 23He also killed an Egyptian who was a giant of a man — 5 cubits tall. The Egyptian carried a spear as thick as a weaver's beam, but Benaiah went at him with just a staff, snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand, and killed him with his own weapon.
  24. 24These were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and they earned him a reputation among the 3 mightiest warriors.
  25. 25He was more honored than any of the 30, though he didn't rank among the top 3. David put him in charge of his personal bodyguard.
  26. 26The mighty warriors of the army also included: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo from Bethlehem,
  27. 27Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite,
  28. 28Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Antothite,
