  1. 1One day, while David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, "Look — I'm living in a house built with cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD is sitting under curtains."
  2. 2Nathan replied, "Do whatever is on your heart. God is with you."
  3. 3But that same night, the word of God came to Nathan:
  4. 4"Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD says: You are not the one who will build me a house to live in.
  5. 5I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up Israel until now; I have moved from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.
  6. 6In all the places I traveled with Israel, did I ever say to any of the judges I appointed to shepherd my people, "Why haven't you built me a house of cedar?"'
  7. 7"Now tell my servant David, 'The LORD of hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following sheep, to be the ruler over my people Israel.
  8. 8I have been with you everywhere you've gone, destroyed all your enemies before you, and made your name as famous as the greatest people on earth.
  9. 9I will establish a place for my people Israel and plant them there, and they will live in their own place and not be moved again. The children of wickedness will no longer destroy them as they did in the past,
  10. 10as they have since the time I appointed judges over my people Israel. I will subdue all your enemies. Furthermore, I tell you that the LORD will build a house for you.
  11. 11When your life comes to an end and you join your ancestors, I will raise up one of your own sons to succeed you, and I will establish his kingdom.
  12. 12He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will make his throne last forever.
  13. 13I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my mercy away from him the way I took it from the one who ruled before you.
  14. 14I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever, and his throne will stand for all time.'"
  15. 15Nathan told David everything — every word and every detail of this vision.
  16. 16Then King David went in and sat before the LORD. He prayed, "Who am I, LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?
  17. 17And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O God; for you have also spoken of your servant’s house for a long time to come, and have regarded me according to the status of a man of high rank, O LORD God.
  18. 18What more can David say to you about the honor of your servant? For you know your servant.
  19. 19LORD, you have done all this greatness for your servant's sake and according to your own heart, making known all these great things.
  20. 20O LORD, there is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
  21. 21What one nation on earth is like your people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make yourself a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before your people, whom you have redeemed out of Egypt?
  22. 22You made Israel your own people forever, and you, LORD, became their God.
  23. 23So now, LORD, let the promise you made about your servant and his family stand forever. Do exactly what you said.
  24. 24Let it be established so that your name will be honored forever, and people will say, 'The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel — he is God to Israel.' And let the dynasty of your servant David be established before you.
  25. 25For you, my God, have told your servant that you will build him a house. Therefore, your servant has found it in his heart to pray before you.
  26. 26LORD, you are God, and you have promised this wonderful thing to your servant.
  27. 27Now may it please you to bless your servant's family so that it will continue before you forever. For when you bless something, LORD, it is blessed forever."
