1. 1David gathered all of Israel's leaders to Jerusalem — the tribal chiefs, the commanders of the divisions that served the king in rotation, the officers over units of 1,000 and 100, the officials who managed the king's property and livestock and those of his sons, the court officers, the mighty warriors, and every fighting man of distinction.
2. 2King David rose to his feet and said, "Listen to me, my brothers and my people: I had it in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and a footstool for our God. I had made preparations for the building."
3. 3But God told me, 'You will not build a house for my name, because you are a man of war who has shed blood.'
4. 4Yet the LORD God of Israel chose me from my entire family to be king over Israel forever. He chose Judah to be the ruler, and from the house of Judah, he chose my father's family. Among my father's sons, he liked me to make me king over all Israel.
5. 5And out of all my sons — the LORD has given me many — he chose Solomon to sit on the throne of the LORD's kingdom over Israel.
6. 6God told me, 'Your son Solomon is the one who will build my house and my courts, because I have chosen him as my son, and I will be his father.
7. 7I will make his kingdom last forever, if he remains faithful to carry out my commands and my laws, just as he does today.'
8. 8So now, in front of all Israel, the assembly of the LORD, and with our God listening, keep and seek all the commandments of the LORD your God. This way, you may possess this good land and leave it as an inheritance for your children forever.
9. 9And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind. For the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you. But if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.
10. 10Pay attention now: the LORD has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary. Be strong, and do it.
11. 11Then David handed Solomon his son the plans for the temple porch, its buildings, its storerooms, its upper rooms, its inner chambers, and the room for the mercy seat.
12. 12And the pattern of all that he had by the Spirit, of the courts of the house of the LORD, and of all the chambers round about, of the treasuries of the house of God, and of the treasuries of the dedicated things:
13. 13He included instructions for the divisions of the priests and Levites, for all the duties of serving in the LORD's house, and for every piece of equipment used in that service.
14. 14David specified the exact weight of gold for every gold item used in each type of service, and the exact weight of silver for every silver item used in each type of service.
15. 15He gave the weight of gold for each gold lampstand and its lamps, and the weight of silver for each silver lampstand and its lamps, according to how each one would be used.
16. 16He specified the weight of gold for each table that held the bread of the Presence, and the weight of silver for the silver tables.
17. 17He gave specifications for the forks, basins, and cups of pure gold, and the weight of gold for each golden bowl and the weight of silver for each silver bowl.
18. 18He also specified the weight of refined gold for the altar of incense, and gold for the design of the chariot — the cherubim that spread their wings over the ark of the LORD's covenant.
19. 19David said, "The LORD made me understand all of this in writing, with his hand upon me, every detail of these plans."
20. 20Then David told his son Solomon, "Be strong and courageous, and get this done. Don't be afraid or discouraged, because the LORD God — my God — is with you. He won't let you down or abandon you until every bit of work for the LORD's house is complete.
21. 21The divisions of priests and Levites are ready to handle every aspect of service in God's house. Every skilled and willing craftsman will be available to help you with whatever needs to be done. The leaders and all the people are fully at your command."
