- 1Now concerning food offered to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes people proud, but love builds up.
- 2If anyone thinks that they know anything, they still know nothing as they should know it.
- 3But the person who loves God — that person is truly known by God.
- 4So when it comes to eating food that was sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol has no real existence, and that there is no God but one.
- 5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many 'gods' and many 'lords',
- 6But for us there is only one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we through him.
- 7However, not everyone has this knowledge. Some, still conscious of the idol, eat the food as something offered to an idol, and because their conscience is weak, it is defiled.
- 8Food does not commend us to God. We are no better if we eat, and no worse if we do not eat.
- 9But be careful that this freedom of yours does not cause those who are weak to stumble.
- 10For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, who have knowledge, eating in an idol's temple, won't they be encouraged to eat food offered to idols?
- 11And through your knowledge, will the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
- 12When you sin against your brothers and sisters in this way, and wound their weak conscience, you are sinning against Christ.
- 13That's why, if what I eat causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again — ever — rather than be the reason my brother falls.
