- 1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves the one born of Him as well.
- 2Here's how we know we love God's children: we love God and obey his commandments.
- 3For this is the love of God: that we keep his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome.
- 4Everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.
- 5Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
- 6This is Jesus Christ, who came by water and blood—not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that testifies, because the Spirit is truth.
- 7There are three that testify in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit — and these three are one.
- 8And there are three that testify on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three are in agreement.
- 9If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is greater, because this is the testimony of God that He has given about His Son.
- 10Anyone who believes in the Son of God has the witness within himself. Anyone who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he does not believe the testimony God gave about His Son.
- 11And here is that testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is found in his Son.
- 12Whoever has the Son has life. Whoever doesn't have the Son of God doesn't have life.
- 13I've written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may believe in the name of the Son of God.
- 14This is the confidence we have in him: if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
- 15And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, then we know we already have what we've asked him for.
- 16If anyone sees his brother committing a sin that does not lead to death, he should ask, and he will give him life for those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death; I am not saying that he should pray about that.
- 17All unrighteousness is sin, but there is a sin that does not lead to death.
- 18We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who is begotten of God keeps himself, and that wicked one does not touch him.
- 19We know that we belong to God, and the whole world lies in wickedness.
- 20We also know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we can know the one who is true. And we are in the one who is true — in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
- 21Dear children, guard yourselves from idols. Amen.
