  1. 1To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also as one who will share in the glory that will be revealed:
  2. 2Be shepherds of God's flock that's in your care. Watch over them — not because you have to, but because you want to. Don't do it for the money, but because you're eager to serve.
  3. 3Don't lord your authority over the people entrusted to you. Instead, lead by example.
  4. 4When the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of glory that never fades away.
  5. 5In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
  6. 6So humble yourselves under God's mighty hand, and when the right time comes, he will lift you up.
  7. 7Place all your worries on him, because he cares for you.
  8. 8Stay clear-headed and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
  9. 9Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world.
  10. 10The God of all grace has called you into his eternal glory through Christ Jesus. After you've suffered for a little while, he himself will restore you, establish you, strengthen you, and set you on a firm foundation.
  11. 11To him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
  12. 12With the help of Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother, I have written briefly to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God in which you stand.
  13. 13The church that is at Babylon, chosen together with you, sends greetings; and so does Mark, my son.
  14. 14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
