- 1All who are slaves should consider their masters worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and his teaching are not blasphemed.
- 2And those who have believing masters should not look down on them because they are brothers, but rather should serve them, because they are faithful and beloved, sharing in the benefit. Teach and urge these things.
- 3If anyone teaches something different and refuses to accept the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that leads to godliness,
- 4he is arrogant and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy obsession with arguments and fights over words, which produce envy, conflict, insults, and evil suspicions.
- 5Perverse arguments of men with corrupt minds, who lack the truth, thinking that gain is godliness: withdraw yourself from such people.
- 6But godliness with contentment is great gain.
- 7After all, we brought nothing into this world, and we certainly can't take anything out of it.
- 8So if we have food and clothing, let's be satisfied with that.
- 9But people who are determined to get rich fall into temptation and a trap, caught by many foolish and harmful desires that drag them down into ruin and perdition.
- 10For the love of money is the root of all evil. Some people, in their desire for it, have strayed from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
- 11But you, man of God, run from all of this. Instead, pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and meekness.
- 12Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and have made a good confession before many witnesses.
- 13In the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who made a good confession before Pontius Pilate, I give you this charge:
- 14Keep this commandment without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 15At the proper time, he will reveal who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords;
- 16He alone possesses immortality, living in light so brilliant that no one can approach it. No one has ever seen him, and no one can. To him be honor and eternal power. Amen.
- 17Tell those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant or to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain. Instead, they should put their hope in the living God, who generously gives us everything to enjoy.
- 18Tell them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
- 19In this way they store up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, so that they may take hold of eternal life.
- 20Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid profane and empty talk, and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge.
- 21Some who have claimed such knowledge have wandered away from the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.
