- 1Rehoboam traveled to Shechem, because all of Israel had gathered there to make him king.
- 2When Jeroboam son of Nebat, who was in Egypt because he had fled from King Solomon, heard about it, he returned from Egypt.
- 3The people sent for Jeroboam, and he came with all of Israel to speak with Rehoboam. They said,
- 4Your father made our burden heavy. Now, please lighten the harsh labor and heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.
- 5Rehoboam said to them, "Come back to me after three days." So the people departed.
- 6King Rehoboam consulted the older advisors who had served his father Solomon while he was still alive. "How do you think I should respond to these people?" he asked.
- 7They told him, "If you treat these people with kindness, please them, and speak good words to them, they will be your servants forever."
- 8But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the older men. Instead, he turned to the young men he'd grown up with, who now served as his advisors.
- 9He asked them, "What do you think? How should I answer these people who are asking me to lighten the burden my father put on them?"
- 10The young men who had grown up with him said to him, "This is how you should answer the people who spoke to you, saying, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it somewhat lighter for us.' This is what you should say to them: 'My little finger will be thicker than my father's loins.'"
- 11If my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I'll make it even heavier. My father disciplined you with whips, but I'll discipline you with scorpions.'"
- 12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the 3rd day, as the king said, "Come again to me on the 3rd day."
- 13The king answered them harshly. He rejected the advice of the older men
- 14and followed the advice of the young men instead. He told them, "My father burdened you with a heavy yoke, and I'll make it even heavier. My father disciplined you with whips, but I'll discipline you with scorpions."
- 15The king did not listen to the people, for this was from God, so that the LORD might fulfill his word, which he spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
- 16When all Israel saw that the king would not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, "What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to your tents, O Israel! Now, David, take care of your own house." So all Israel went to their tents.
- 17But Rehoboam still ruled over the Israelites who lived in the towns of Judah.
- 18Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was in charge of the tribute, but the Israelites stoned him to death. King Rehoboam quickly got into his chariot to flee to Jerusalem.
- 19From that day on, Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David.
