  1. 1Hezekiah became king at the age of 25, and he reigned in Jerusalem for 29 years. His mother was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah.
  2. 2He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, following all that his father David had done.
  3. 3In the very first month of his first year as king, he reopened the doors of the LORD's temple and had them repaired.
  4. 4He assembled the priests and the Levites in the open square on the east side of the temple
  5. 5and said to them, "Listen to me, Levites! Consecrate yourselves and consecrate the house of the LORD, the God of your ancestors. Carry out the filthiness from the holy place."
  6. 6For our fathers have trespassed and done what was evil in the eyes of the LORD our God. They have forsaken him, turned their faces away from the habitation of the LORD, and turned their backs.
  7. 7They even shut the doors of the temple porch, snuffed out the lamps, and stopped burning incense and offering burnt offerings in the holy place to the God of Israel.
  8. 8Because of this, the wrath of the LORD was upon Judah and Jerusalem, and He delivered them to trouble, astonishment, and hissing, as you have seen with your own eyes.
  9. 9Our fathers have been killed by the sword, and our sons, daughters, and wives have been taken captive because of all this.
  10. 10Now I intend to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, so that his fierce anger will turn away from us.
  11. 11My sons, don't be careless about this. The LORD has chosen you to stand in his presence, to serve him, to minister before him, and to burn incense."
  12. 12Then the Levites arose: Mahath son of Amasai and Joel son of Azariah from the Kohathites; Kish son of Abdi and Azariah son of Jehalelel from the sons of Merari; Joah son of Zimmah and Eden son of Joah from the Gershonites.
  13. 13From the descendants of Elizaphan: Shimri and Jeiel. From the descendants of Asaph: Zechariah and Mattaniah.
  14. 14From the descendants of Heman: Jehiel and Shimei. From the descendants of Jeduthun: Shemaiah and Uzziel.
  15. 15They gathered their fellow Levites, consecrated themselves, and entered the temple to cleanse the LORD's house, just as the king had commanded based on the word of the LORD.
  16. 16The priests went into the innermost part of the LORD's temple to purify it. They brought out all the unclean things they found in the temple into the courtyard of the LORD's house. The Levites then took these items to carry them out to the brook Kidron.
  17. 17They started the consecration on the 1st day of the 1st month. By the 8th day they had reached the temple porch. They spent another 8 days consecrating the LORD's house itself, finishing on the 16th day of the 1st month.
  18. 18Then they went to King Hezekiah and reported, "We have cleansed the entire house of the LORD — the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the table for the bread of the Presence and all its utensils.
  19. 19We have also restored and consecrated all the vessels that King Ahaz discarded during his unfaithful reign. They are now in place before the LORD's altar."
  20. 20King Hezekiah got up early the next morning, gathered the city's leaders, and went up to the LORD's temple.
  21. 21They brought 7 bulls, 7 rams, 7 lambs, and 7 male goats as a sin offering for the kingdom, for the sanctuary, and for Judah. Hezekiah ordered the priests — the descendants of Aaron — to offer them on the LORD's altar.
  22. 22The priests slaughtered the bulls, caught the blood, and sprinkled it on the altar. Then they slaughtered the rams and sprinkled their blood on the altar. They did the same with the lambs.
  23. 23Next, the male goats for the sin offering were brought before the king and the assembly, and they laid their hands on them.
  24. 24The priests slaughtered them and used their blood on the altar to make reconciliation and atonement for all Israel, because the king had ordered that the burnt offering and the sin offering be made for all Israel.
  25. 25Hezekiah stationed the Levites in the LORD's temple with cymbals, harps, and lyres, following the instructions that David, Gad the king's seer, and Nathan the prophet had given — for this command had come from the LORD through his prophets.
  26. 26The Levites stood ready with the instruments David had provided, and the priests stood with their trumpets.
  27. 27Hezekiah gave the order to offer the burnt offering on the altar. The moment the burnt offering began, singing to the LORD also began, accompanied by trumpets and the instruments of King David of Israel.
  28. 28The whole assembly worshiped, the singers sang, and the trumpeters played. All of this continued until the burnt offering was complete.
  29. 29When the offerings were finished, the king and everyone with him knelt down and worshiped.
  30. 30Then King Hezekiah and the officials told the Levites to sing praises to the LORD using the psalms of David and Asaph the seer. They sang with great joy, then bowed their heads and worshiped.
  31. 31Hezekiah then said, "You have now consecrated yourselves to the LORD. Come forward and bring sacrifices and thank offerings into the LORD's house." So the assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings, and everyone who was willing also brought burnt offerings.
  32. 32The total number of burnt offerings the assembly brought was 70 bulls, 100 rams, and 200 lambs — all of these as burnt offerings to the LORD.
  33. 33The consecrated offerings totaled 600 cattle and 3,000 sheep.
  34. 34But the priests were too few, so that they could not flay all the burnt offerings. Therefore their brothers the Levites helped them until the work was finished, and until the other priests had sanctified themselves. For the Levites were more upright in heart to sanctify themselves than the priests.
  35. 35On top of the large number of burnt offerings, there was also the fat from the peace offerings and the drink offerings that accompanied each burnt offering. And so the worship at the LORD's temple was fully restored.
  36. 36Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced because God had prepared the people, for it had all happened so quickly.
