- 1When all this was finished, all the Israelites who were present went out to the cities of Judah and broke the images in pieces, cut down the groves, and tore down the high places and altars throughout Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh until they had completely destroyed them. Then all the children of Israel returned, each to his own possession, to their own cities.
- 2Hezekiah appointed the courses of the priests and the Levites after their courses, every man according to his service, for burnt offerings and for peace offerings, to serve, to give thanks, and to praise in the gates of the tents of the LORD.
- 3He also designated the king's portion of his substance for the burnt offerings, specifically for the morning and evening offerings, the Sabbath offerings, the new moon offerings, and the offerings for the appointed festivals, as it is written in the law of the LORD.
- 4Moreover, he commanded the people living in Jerusalem to give the portion to the priests and Levites, so they might be encouraged in the law of the LORD.
- 5As soon as the order went out, the Israelites responded generously, bringing large quantities of the firstfruits of their grain, new wine, olive oil, honey, and everything else their fields produced. They also brought in a full tithe of everything abundantly.
- 6The people of Israel and Judah who lived in the towns of Judah also brought in a tithe of their cattle and sheep, along with a tithe of the holy things that had been dedicated to the LORD their God. They piled it all up in heaps.
- 7In the 3rd month they began to lay the foundation of the heaps, and finished them in the 7th month.
- 8When Hezekiah and his officials came and saw the heaps, they blessed the LORD and his people Israel.
- 9Hezekiah asked the priests and Levites about the heaps.
- 10Azariah the chief priest, from the family of Zadok, answered him, "Ever since the people started bringing their offerings to the LORD's temple, we've had more than enough to eat, with plenty left over. The LORD has blessed his people so richly that all of this is what remains."
- 11Hezekiah then ordered that storerooms be prepared in the LORD's temple, and they got them ready.
- 12The people faithfully brought in their offerings, tithes, and dedicated gifts. Conaniah the Levite was put in charge of all of it, with his brother Shimei as his second-in-command.
- 13Serving under Conaniah and Shimei as supervisors were Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath, Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismachiah, Mahath, and Benaiah. They were all appointed by King Hezekiah and Azariah, the chief official of God's temple.
- 14Kore son of Imnah, a Levite who served as gatekeeper at the East Gate, was in charge of the freewill offerings given to God. His job was to distribute the LORD's offerings and the most holy things.
- 15Next to him were Eden, Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah, in the cities of the priests, in their appointed office, to distribute to their brethren by divisions, both to the great and to the small.
- 16This was in addition to all the males three years old and older who were registered in the genealogies—everyone who came to the LORD's temple for their daily duties, serving in their assigned roles according to their divisions.
- 17The priests were registered by their family lines, and the Levites twenty years old and older were registered by their duties and divisions.
- 18The registrations also included all their dependents—their small children, wives, sons, and daughters—throughout the whole community. For in their assigned duties, they sanctified themselves in holiness.
- 19As for the descendants of Aaron — the priests living on the pasturelands around their cities — men were specifically designated by name in every town to distribute shares to every male among the priests and to everyone registered in the Levite genealogies.
- 20Hezekiah carried out these reforms throughout all of Judah. Everything he did was good, right, and faithful before the LORD his God.
- 21In every project he undertook for God's temple, in following the law and the commandments, and in seeking his God, he threw his whole heart into it — and he prospered.
