  1. 1Manasseh was 12 years old when he became king, and he reigned 55 years in Jerusalem.
  2. 2He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, following the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the children of Israel.
  3. 3He rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had torn down, set up altars to the Baals, made Asherah poles, and bowed down to all the stars of heaven and worshiped them.
  4. 4He also built altars in the house of the LORD, where the LORD had said, 'In Jerusalem shall my name be forever.'
  5. 5He built altars to all the stars of heaven in both courtyards of the LORD's temple.
  6. 6He caused his children to pass through the fire in the Valley of the son of Hinnom. He observed times, used enchantments, practiced witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit and with wizards. He did much evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger.
  7. 7He placed a carved idol he had made in the house of God. God had told David and his son Solomon, 'In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my name forever.'
  8. 8I will not again remove the foot of Israel from the land I have appointed for your fathers, if they will take heed to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.
  9. 9But Manasseh led Judah and the people of Jerusalem astray, making them do worse than the nations the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel.
  10. 10The LORD spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they refused to listen.
  11. 11So the LORD sent the commanders of the Assyrian army against them. They captured Manasseh among the thorns, bound him with bronze chains, and took him to Babylon.
  12. 12In his misery, Manasseh begged the LORD his God for help and deeply humbled himself before the God of his ancestors.
  13. 13He prayed to God, and God was moved by his entreaty, heard his prayer, and brought him back to Jerusalem to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD was God.
  14. 14After that, he built a high outer wall on the west side of the City of David, running from the Gihon spring through the valley all the way to the Fish Gate, encircling the hill of Ophel. He raised it to a tremendous height and stationed military commanders in every fortified city throughout Judah.
  15. 15He removed the foreign gods and the idol from the LORD's temple, along with every altar he had built on the temple mount and throughout Jerusalem, and threw them all outside the city.
  16. 16Then he restored the LORD's altar and offered peace offerings and thank offerings on it. He ordered all of Judah to serve the LORD, the God of Israel.
  17. 17The people still offered sacrifices at the high places, though they offered them only to the LORD their God.
  18. 18The rest of the acts of Manasseh, including his prayer to his God and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the LORD God of Israel, are written in the book of the kings of Israel.
  19. 19His prayer, how God responded to it, all his sin and unfaithfulness, and the locations where he built high places and set up Asherah poles and carved images before he humbled himself — all of this is recorded in the writings of the seers.
  20. 20Manasseh joined his ancestors in death and was buried in his own palace. His son Amon became king after him.
  21. 21Amon was 22 years old when he became king, and he reigned 2 years in Jerusalem.
  22. 22But he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father Manasseh did. For Amon sacrificed to all the carved images his father Manasseh had made, and served them.
  23. 23But unlike his father Manasseh, Amon did not humble himself before the LORD; instead, he sinned more and more.
  24. 24His own officials conspired against him and assassinated him in his palace.
  25. 25But the common people of the land killed everyone who had plotted against King Amon, and they made his son Josiah the next king.
