- 1When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.
- 2The priests could not enter the house of the LORD because the glory of the LORD had filled the LORD's house.
- 3When all the children of Israel saw the fire come down and the glory of the LORD upon the temple, they bowed with their faces to the ground on the stone pavement. They worshiped and praised the LORD, saying, "For he is good; for his mercy endures forever."
- 4Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the LORD.
- 5King Solomon offered 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep as sacrifices. In this way, the king and all the people dedicated the house of God.
- 6The priests waited on their offices, and the Levites also with instruments of music of the LORD, which David the king had made to praise the LORD, because his mercy endures forever, when David praised by their ministry. The priests sounded trumpets before them, and all Israel stood.
- 7Solomon also consecrated the center of the courtyard in front of the house of the LORD as holy. He offered the burnt offerings and the fat of the peace offerings there because the bronze altar he had made was not able to hold all the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and fat.
- 8At that same time, Solomon held the festival for seven days, and all Israel celebrated with him—a massive assembly from the entrance of Hamath to the river of Egypt.
- 9On the eighth day, they held a solemn assembly, for they had dedicated the altar for seven days and celebrated the feast for seven days.
- 10On the 23rd day of the 7th month, Solomon sent the people home to their tents. They left with joy and merry hearts because of all the goodness the LORD had shown to David, to Solomon, and to his people Israel.
- 11Solomon finished building the LORD's temple and the royal palace. Everything he had planned to do in the LORD's temple and in his own house, he accomplished successfully.
- 12Then the LORD appeared to Solomon at night and said to him, "I have heard your prayer, and I have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice.
- 13"If I shut up the heavens so there is no rain, or if I command locusts to devour the land, or if I send a plague among my people —
- 14if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways — then I will hear from heaven, I will forgive their sin, and I will heal their land.
- 15Now my eyes will be open, and my ears attentive to the prayer made in this place.
- 16I have chosen and sanctified this house so that my name will be here forever. My eyes and my heart will be here always.
- 17"As for you — if you walk before me the way your father David did, doing everything I have commanded you and keeping my statutes and my laws,
- 18then I will establish the throne of your kingdom, as I have covenanted with David your father, saying, 'You will not lack a man to rule in Israel.'
- 19"But if you turn away and abandon the statutes and commandments I have given you, and go off to serve other gods and worship them,
- 20then I will pluck them up by the roots from the land I gave them. This house, which I have sanctified for my name, I will cast out of my sight and make it a proverb and a byword among all nations.
- 21And this house, which is high, will be an astonishment to everyone who passes by it. They will ask, 'Why has the LORD done this to this land and to this house?'
- 22And the answer will be: 'Because they abandoned the LORD, the God of their ancestors, who brought them out of Egypt. They clung to other gods, worshiped them, and served them. That is why he brought all this disaster on them.'"
