1. 1From the elder, to the chosen lady and her children — I love you in the truth, and not just me, but everyone who has come to know the truth.
2. 2For the sake of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever.
3. 3May grace, mercy, and peace be with you from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
4. 4It brought me great joy to discover that some of your children are living according to the truth, just as the Father commanded us.
5. 5Now I'm asking you, dear lady — not as if this were some new commandment, but the same one we've had from the beginning — that we love one another.
6. 6This is what love means: that we live according to his commandments. And this is the commandment you've heard from the very beginning — that you should live by it.
7. 7Many deceivers have gone out into the world — people who refuse to acknowledge that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. Anyone who does this is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8. 8Watch yourselves, so that you don't lose what we have worked for, but that you receive a full reward.
9. 9Anyone who transgresses and does not remain in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. But whoever remains in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.
10. 10If someone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not welcome him into your home or say 'God speed' to him.
11. 11For he who greets him with "Godspeed" is a partaker of his evil deeds.
12. 12I have so much more to say to you, but I'd rather not put it in a letter. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete.
13. 13The children of your chosen sister send their greetings. Amen.
