- 1David sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from all his enemies, including Saul:
- 2He said, "The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.
- 3The God of my rock; in him I will trust: he is my shield, the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence.
- 4I will call on the LORD, who deserves all praise, and I will be saved from my enemies.
- 5The waves of death closed in around me, and the floods of ungodly men terrified me.
- 6The sorrows of hell surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me;
- 7In my distress, I called upon the LORD and cried to my God. He heard my voice from his temple, and my cry reached his ears.
- 8Then the earth shook and trembled. The foundations of the heavens quaked and shuddered because he was angry.
- 9Smoke poured from his nostrils, and consuming fire blazed from his mouth. Burning coals flared out from him.
- 10He parted the heavens and came down, with thick darkness beneath his feet.
- 11He rode on a cherub and flew; he was seen on the wings of the wind.
- 12He made darkness his pavilions all around him, with dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
- 13From the brilliance of his presence, coals of fire blazed to life.
- 14The LORD thundered from heaven, and the Most High let his voice ring out.
- 15He launched his arrows and scattered them; he hurled lightning and threw them into chaos.
- 16The channels of the sea were exposed, and the foundations of the earth were laid bare at the LORD's rebuke, at the fierce blast of breath from his nostrils.
- 17He reached down from above and took hold of me; he drew me out of many waters.
- 18He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from those who hated me — they were far too strong for me.
- 19They confronted me on the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support.
- 20He brought me out into an open place. He rescued me because he was pleased with me.
- 21The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; He repaid me because my hands were clean.
- 22I have followed the LORD's ways and have not turned away from my God in wickedness.
- 23For all his judgments were before me, and I did not turn away from his statutes.
- 24I was also upright before him, and I have kept myself from my iniquity.
- 25So the LORD has rewarded me for my righteousness, for the cleanness he sees in me.
- 26To the merciful, you show mercy. To the blameless, you show yourself blameless.
- 27To the pure, you show yourself pure. But to the crooked, you show yourself shrewd.
- 28You save people who are suffering, but your eyes are on the arrogant — and you bring them down.
- 29You are my lamp, LORD. The LORD turns my darkness into light.
- 30With your help I can charge an army. With my God I can scale a wall.
- 31As for God, his way is perfect. The word of the LORD has been proven true. He is a shield to everyone who takes refuge in him.
- 32Who is God besides the LORD? And who is a rock except our God?
- 33God is my strength and power; He makes my way perfect.
- 34He makes my feet as sure as a deer's and sets me upon my high places.
- 35He trains my hands for battle so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
- 36You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your gentleness has made me great.
- 37You made my steps wide beneath me, so my feet did not slip.
- 38I chased my enemies and destroyed them. I didn't turn back until they were finished.
- 39I crushed them and struck them down so they couldn't get up again. They fell beneath my feet.
- 40You armed me with strength for battle. You subdued those who rose against me under me.
- 41You have given me the necks of my enemies, so I could destroy those who hate me.
- 42They looked for help, but no one came to save them. They even cried out to the LORD, but he didn't answer.
- 43I ground them fine as dust on the ground. I crushed them like mud in the streets and scattered them.
- 44You also delivered me from the strivings of my people; you made me the head of the heathen. A people I did not know shall serve me.
- 45Foreigners come cringing before me. The moment they hear of me, they obey.
- 46Foreigners lose their courage and come trembling out of their strongholds.
- 47The LORD lives! Blessed be my rock! Exalted be God, the rock of my salvation!
- 48It is God who avenges me and brings the people down under me.
- 49He rescues me from my enemies. You lift me high above those who attack me. You deliver me from violent men.
- 50Therefore, I will thank you, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises to your name.
- 51He is a tower of salvation for his king. He shows mercy to his anointed—to David and his descendants forever.
