- 1So, my son, draw your strength from the grace that comes through Christ Jesus.
- 2The things you have heard me teach in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others as well.
- 3Be willing to endure hardship like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.
- 4A soldier on active duty doesn't get tangled up in civilian affairs — his goal is to please the one who enlisted him.
- 5In the same way, an athlete doesn't win the prize unless he competes by the rules.
- 6The farmer who does the hard work should be the first to enjoy the harvest.
- 7Think carefully about what I'm saying, and may the Lord give you understanding in all of this.
- 8Remember that Jesus Christ, a descendant of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel.
- 9Because of this gospel, I'm suffering to the point of being chained up like a criminal. But God's word can't be chained.
- 10That's why I endure everything for the sake of God's chosen people, so that they too can receive the salvation that comes through Christ Jesus, along with eternal glory.
- 11Here is a saying you can trust: If we died with him, we will also live with him.
- 12If we endure, we will also reign with him. If we deny him, he will also deny us.
- 13Even if we are faithless, he remains faithful — because he cannot deny who he is.
- 14Keep reminding people of these things. Warn them before the Lord not to argue over words. It does no good and only ruins those who listen.
- 15Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, correctly handling the word of truth.
- 16Stay away from godless, empty talk, because it only leads people deeper into ungodliness.
- 17Their teaching will spread like a disease: among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus;
- 18They've wandered away from the truth by claiming the resurrection has already happened, and they're destroying the faith of some believers.
- 19Nevertheless the foundation of God stands firm, bearing this seal: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Let everyone who claims the name of Christ turn away from wickedness."
- 20But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for honor, and some for dishonor.
- 21If anyone therefore cleanses himself from these, he will be a vessel for honor, made holy, useful to the master, and prepared for every good work.
- 22Flee youthful lusts, but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
- 23Don't get drawn into foolish, ignorant debates. You know they only produce conflict.
- 24The Lord's servant must not quarrel. Instead, he should be gentle with everyone, able to teach, and patient,
- 25correcting opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will give them repentance that leads to a full knowledge of the truth,
- 26and they'll come to their senses and escape the devil's trap, where he's been holding them captive to do his will.
