And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees’ part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

Verse Analysis

Plain-English insight for readers

In this moment, a significant disturbance broke out among the crowd. Some scribes, who were part of the Pharisee group, stood up and passionately defended Paul. They argued that they found no fault in him. They raised an important question: what if Paul had truly received a message from a spirit or an angel? This thought led them to a crucial conclusion: it would be unwise to oppose God. Their words highlighted the tension between belief and skepticism, showing that even in disagreement, there can be a search for truth. This scene illustrates the complexity of faith and the importance of being open to the possibility of divine communication. It reminds us that sometimes, we must step back and consider the bigger picture before jumping to conclusions about others' experiences and beliefs. The Pharisees' willingness to entertain the idea of a divine message challenges us to reflect on our own openness to the unexpected ways in which we might encounter the divine in our lives. Acts 1: The Ascension and the Choosing of Matthias

Jesus shows himself alive to the apostles after his suffering, speaking about the kingdom of God. He commands them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for the promise of the Father, saying they will be baptized with the Holy Ghost soon. They ask if he will restore the kingdom to Israel, and he tells them it is not for them to know the times, but they will receive power when the Holy Ghost comes upon them and will be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judaea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. As they watch, he is taken up, and a cloud receives him out of their sight. Two men in white apparel tell them that this same Jesus will return in the same way they have seen him go.
