- 1During this time, as the number of disciples increased, a complaint arose from the Greek-speaking believers against the Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution.
- 2Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples to them and said, “It is not right that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.”
- 3So, brothers, choose 7 men from among you who are well respected and full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. We'll put them in charge of this responsibility.
- 4Instead, we will devote ourselves fully to prayer and to the ministry of the word.
- 5Everyone was pleased with this idea. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, along with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas — a convert to Judaism from Antioch.
- 6They brought these men before the apostles, who prayed over them and laid their hands on them.
- 7The word of God increased, and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly. A great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.
- 8Stephen, full of faith and power, performed great wonders and miracles among the people.
- 9But some men from the synagogue known as the Freedmen — including Jews from Cyrene, Alexandria, Cilicia, and Asia — stood up and began arguing with Stephen.
- 10They couldn't resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spoke.
- 11Then they secretly persuaded men to say, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God."
- 12This stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes. They rushed at Stephen, seized him, and dragged him before the council.
- 13They brought in false witnesses who testified, "This man never stops speaking against this holy place and the law.
- 14We've heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us."
- 15Everyone sitting in the council stared at Stephen, and they saw that his face looked like the face of an angel.
