- 1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right.
- 2"Honor your father and mother" — this is the first commandment that comes with a promise:
- 3"so that things will go well for you, and you will live a long life on the earth."
- 4Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger. Instead, raise them with the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
- 5Servants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as if you were serving Christ.
- 6Don't just work hard when they're watching to impress them. Instead, work as servants of Christ, doing God's will from the heart.
- 7Serve with good will, as if you are working for the Lord and not for people.
- 8Remember that whatever good anyone does, they will receive the same from the Lord, whether they are slave or free.
- 9Masters, treat your servants the same way. Stop threatening them. Remember that both you and they share the same Master in heaven, and he shows no favoritism.
- 10Finally, my brothers and sisters, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
- 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand firm against the devil's schemes.
- 12For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual wickedness in high places.
- 13So put on the full armor of God. Then when the day of evil comes, you will be able to hold your ground, and after you have done everything possible, you will still be standing.
- 14Stand firm, then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist and the breastplate of righteousness protecting your chest.
- 15Fit your feet with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
- 16Above all, take up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to put out all the flaming darts of the wicked one.
- 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
- 18Pray at all times in the Spirit with every kind of prayer and supplication. Stay alert and persevere as you pray for all the saints.
- 19Pray for me too, that I may be given the words to boldly make known the mystery of the gospel.
- 20I am an ambassador for this gospel, even though I'm currently in chains. Pray that I will speak it as boldly as I should.
- 21Tychicus, a dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything about how I'm doing and what's happening with me.
- 22I'm sending him to you for this very reason — so you can know how we are and so he can encourage your hearts.
- 23Peace to the brothers and sisters, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 24Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen.
