- 1The LORD told Moses, "Leave this place. Take the people you brought out of Egypt and head to the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I said, 'I will give this land to your descendants.'
- 2I will send an angel ahead of you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
- 3Go to that land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you myself, because you are a stubborn people, and I might destroy you along the way."
- 4When the people heard this terrible news, they mourned deeply. No one put on any jewelry.
- 5The LORD had told Moses, "Say to the people of Israel: 'You are a stubborn people. If I traveled among you for even a moment, I would destroy you. So take off your jewelry now, and I will decide what to do with you.'"
- 6And the children of Israel removed their ornaments by Mount Horeb.
- 7Moses would take a tent and set it up far outside the camp. He called it the Tent of Meeting. Anyone who wanted to seek the LORD would go out to the Tent of Meeting, outside the camp.
- 8Whenever Moses walked out to the Tent, all the people would stand up. Each person stood at the entrance of their own tent and watched Moses until he disappeared inside.
- 9As soon as Moses entered the Tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and hover at the entrance, and the LORD would speak with Moses.
- 10When the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the Tent, they all rose and worshipped, each person at the door of their own tent.
- 11The LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. He returned to the camp, but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle.
- 12Moses said to the LORD, "You say to me, 'Lead this people,' but you haven't told me who you will send with me. Yet you have said, 'I know you by name, and you have found favor with me.'"
- 13So if I truly have found favor with you, please show me your ways so I can know you and continue to find favor with you. And remember — this nation is your people."
- 14The LORD answered, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."
- 15Moses replied, "If your presence isn't going with us, then don't send us from here at all.
- 16How will anyone know that your people and I have found favor with you unless you go with us? That's what sets us apart from every other nation on the face of the earth."
- 17The LORD said to Moses, "I will do exactly what you've asked, because you have found favor with me, and I know you by name."
- 18Then Moses said, "Please — show me your glory."
- 19The LORD replied, "I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name — the LORD — in your presence. I will be gracious to whoever I choose to be gracious to, and I will show mercy to whoever I choose to show mercy to."
- 20But he added, "You cannot see my face, because no one can see me and live."
- 21Then the LORD said, "Look — there is a place near me where you can stand on a rock.
- 22And it will happen that while my glory passes by, I will place you in a cleft of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.
- 23Then I will take my hand away, and you will see my back. But my face must not be seen."
