- 1The LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: Let my people go, that they may serve me.'"
- 2If you refuse to let them go, I will strike your entire country with a plague of frogs.
- 3The Nile will swarm with frogs. They'll crawl into your palace, into your bedroom, and onto your bed. They'll invade your servants' houses, crawl all over your people, and get into your ovens and your bread dough.
- 4The frogs will swarm over you, your people, and every one of your servants."'"
- 5Then the LORD told Moses, "Tell Aaron to stretch out his hand with his staff over the rivers, streams, and pools, and bring frogs up across the whole land of Egypt."
- 6So Aaron stretched his hand out over the waters of Egypt, and frogs came up and covered the entire land.
- 7But the magicians did the same with their sorcery, and brought up frogs onto the land of Egypt.
- 8Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Pray to the LORD to take these frogs away from me and my people, and I'll let your people go to offer sacrifices to the LORD."
- 9Moses replied, "I'll give you the honor of choosing the time. When should I pray for you, your servants, and your people so that the frogs are destroyed everywhere except in the Nile?"
- 10"Tomorrow," Pharaoh said. Moses answered, "It will be just as you say, so that you'll know there is no one like the LORD our God.
- 11The frogs will leave you, your houses, your servants, and your people. They'll remain only in the Nile."
- 12Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh, and Moses cried out to the LORD about the frogs he had brought against Pharaoh.
- 13The LORD did according to Moses' word, and the frogs died out of the houses, out of the villages, and out of the fields.
- 14The people piled them up in huge heaps, and the whole land reeked.
- 15But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.
- 16Then the LORD told Moses, "Tell Aaron to stretch out his staff and strike the dust on the ground, so that it becomes lice throughout all of Egypt."
- 17They did it. Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the ground. Lice swarmed over every person and animal — all the dust across Egypt turned into lice.
- 18The magicians tried to produce lice with their sorcery, but this time they couldn't do it. The lice covered people and animals alike.
- 19The magicians told Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart remained hard, and he refused to listen, just as the LORD had said.
- 20The LORD said to Moses, "Get up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh. Look, he is coming out to the water. Say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: Let my people go, that they may serve me.'"
- 21"Otherwise, if you will not let my people go, look, I will send swarms of flies on you, your servants, your people, and into your houses; and the houses of the Egyptians will be full of swarms of flies, as will the ground where they are."
- 22"And on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people live, so that no swarms of flies will be there, so that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth."
- 23I will make a clear distinction between my people and your people. This sign will happen tomorrow."'"
- 24The LORD did exactly that. Terrible swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh's palace, into his servants' houses, and across all of Egypt. The flies devastated the land.
- 25Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, sacrifice to your God in the land."
- 26Moses said, "It is not appropriate to do so, for we will sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God. Look, if we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us?"
- 27"We will go three days' journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God, as he will command us."
- 28Pharaoh said, "All right, I'll let you go sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness — just don't go too far. And pray for me."
- 29Moses said, "As soon as I leave you, I'll pray to the LORD, and tomorrow the swarms of flies will leave you, your servants, and your people. But Pharaoh must not deceive us again by refusing to let the people go to sacrifice to the LORD."
- 30Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD.
- 31The LORD did what Moses asked. He removed every last fly from Pharaoh, his servants, and his people — not a single one remained.
- 32But once again, Pharaoh hardened his heart and refused to let the people go.
