- 1"Now sing a funeral song for the princes of Israel.
- 2Say to them: 'What was your mother? She was a lioness! She made her home among the lions and raised her cubs surrounded by young lions.
- 3She raised one of her cubs, and he grew into a young lion. He learned to hunt prey and devoured men.
- 4The nations also heard of him. He was taken in their pit, and they brought him with chains to the land of Egypt.
- 5When the mother lioness saw that her waiting was in vain and her hope was gone, she took another of her cubs and raised him into a young lion.
- 6He moved among the lions, became a young lion, learned to catch prey, and devoured men.
- 7He knew their desolate palaces and laid waste their cities; the land and everything in it became desolate because of the noise of his roaring.
- 8Then nations from the surrounding provinces joined forces against him. They spread their net over him, and he was caught in their pit.
- 9They put him under guard in chains and brought him to the king of Babylon. They brought him into strongholds so that his voice would no more be heard on the mountains of Israel.
- 10Your mother is like a vine in your blood, planted by the waters. She was fruitful and full of branches because of many waters.
- 11She had strong branches for scepters of those who ruled, and her stature was exalted among the thick branches, and she appeared in her height with her many branches.
- 12But she was ripped out of the ground in fury and thrown down. The scorching east wind dried up her fruit. Her strong branches were snapped off and withered, and fire consumed them.
- 13Now she is planted in the wilderness, in dry and thirsty ground.
- 14Fire has spread from her own branches and devoured her fruit. No strong branch remains — no scepter fit for a ruler.' This is a funeral song, and it will be sung as one."
