  14. 14From the descendants of Bigvai: Uthai and Zabbud, along with 70 males.
  15. 15I gathered everyone together at the river that flows toward Ahava, and we camped there for 3 days. As I looked over the group — the people and the priests — I realized that not a single Levite was among us.
  16. 16So I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, who were leaders, along with Joiarib and Elnathan, men of understanding.
  17. 17I sent them to Iddo, the leader at the place Casiphia, and instructed them on what to say to Iddo and his relatives, the temple servants, at Casiphia, so that they would bring us ministers for the house of our God.
  18. 18Because the good hand of our God was upon us, they brought us a man of understanding from the descendants of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah came with his sons and brothers, eighteen in total.
  19. 19They also brought Hashabiah, along with Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari, together with his relatives and their sons — 20 men.
  20. 20They also brought 220 temple servants — people whose ancestors had been assigned by David and his officials to assist the Levites. Every one of them was registered by name.
  21. 21There at the river of Ahava, I called for a fast so we could afflict ourselves before our God and seek from him the right way for us, our children, and all our possessions.
  22. 22For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way, because we had spoken to the king, saying, "The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him, but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him."
  23. 23So we fasted and prayed to our God about this, and he answered our request.
  24. 24Then I set apart 12 of the leading priests — Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and 10 of their fellow priests —
  25. 25and I weighed out to them the silver, the gold, and the sacred vessels that the king, his advisors, his officials, and all the Israelites present had contributed for the house of our God.
  26. 26I weighed out and handed over to them 650 talents of silver, 100 talents' worth of silver vessels, and 100 talents of gold,
  27. 27along with 20 gold bowls worth 1,000 darics, and 2 vessels of fine polished bronze, as precious as gold.
  28. 28I told them, 'You are holy to the LORD, and these vessels are holy too. The silver and gold are a freewill offering to the LORD, the God of your ancestors.'
  29. 29Guard them carefully until you weigh them out in Jerusalem, in the chambers of the LORD's house, before the leading priests, the Levites, and the heads of Israel's families."
  30. 30So the priests and Levites accepted the weighed-out silver, gold, and vessels to carry them to Jerusalem, to the house of our God.
  31. 31We left the river of Ahava on the 12th day of the 1st month, heading for Jerusalem. God's hand was on us, and he protected us from enemies and those who lay in wait along the way.
  32. 32We arrived in Jerusalem and rested there for 3 days.
  33. 33On the fourth day, the silver, gold, and vessels were weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth son of Uriah the priest. With him was Eleazar son of Phinehas, and with them were the Levites Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui.
  34. 34Every item was counted and weighed, and the total weight was recorded at that time.
  35. 35The exiles who had returned from captivity offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel: 12 bulls for all Israel, 96 rams, 77 lambs, and 12 male goats as a sin offering. All of this was presented as a burnt offering to the LORD.
  36. 36They delivered the king's commissions to the king's lieutenants and the governors on this side of the river, and they supported the people and the house of God.
