- 1You foolish Galatians! Who has cast a spell on you, that you should not obey the truth? Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified right before your eyes!
- 2I only want to know one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by obeying the law, or by hearing with faith?
- 3Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?
- 4Did you go through all that suffering for nothing? I hope it wasn't for nothing.
- 5So then, does the one who gives you the Spirit and works miracles among you do it by the works of the law, or by hearing with faith?
- 6In the same way, Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.
- 7So understand this: the people who live by faith are the children of Abraham.
- 8And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles through faith, announced the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, 'In you shall all nations be blessed.'
- 9So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with faithful Abraham.
- 10But everyone who relies on obeying the law lives under a curse. Scripture says, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue doing everything written in the book of the law."
- 11But it is clear that no one is justified by the law in God’s sight, for, “The righteous will live by faith.”
- 12The law is not based on faith; rather, 'The person who does these things will live by them.'
- 13Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. For it is written, 'Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.'
- 14He did this so that the blessing given to Abraham would come to the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, and so that we could receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
- 15Brothers, I speak in human terms: Even a human covenant, once confirmed, no one cancels or adds to it.
- 16Now, the promises were made to Abraham and his seed. It does not say 'and to seeds,' as if referring to many, but 'and to your seed,' meaning one, which is Christ.
- 17And I say this: The covenant that God confirmed beforehand in Christ cannot be canceled by the law, which came 430 years later, making the promise have no effect.
- 18If the inheritance depends on the law, then it's no longer based on a promise. But God gave it to Abraham by promise.
- 19So what was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the seed to whom the promise was made came. It was ordained by angels and given through a mediator.
- 20Now, a mediator implies more than one party, but God is one.
- 21Does that mean the law works against God's promises? Absolutely not! If a law had been given that could actually give life, then righteousness really would have come through the law.
- 22But Scripture has declared that all are under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
- 23But before faith came, we were kept under the law, confined until the faith that was to be revealed.
- 24Therefore, the law was our guide to lead us to Christ, so that we might be justified by faith.
- 25But now that faith has come, we're no longer under that guardian.
- 26You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
- 27Every one of you who was baptized into Christ has been clothed with Christ.
- 28There is no longer Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female — you are all one in Christ Jesus.
- 29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants and heirs according to the promise.
