- 1Some time later, God tested Abraham. He called out to him, "Abraham!" Abraham replied, "Here I am."
- 2God said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, the one you love, and travel to the land of Moriah. There, sacrifice him as a burnt offering on a mountain that I will show you."
- 3Abraham got up early the next morning, prepared his donkey, and brought along two of his servants and his son Isaac. He chopped wood for the burnt offering, then set out for the place God had directed him to.
- 4On the third day, Abraham looked up and spotted the place in the distance.
- 5Abraham told his servants, "Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will return to you."
- 6Abraham placed the wood for the burnt offering on his son Isaac's back. He himself carried the fire and the knife, and the two of them walked on together.
- 7Isaac spoke up to his father Abraham, "Father?" Abraham answered, "Yes, my son?" Isaac asked, "I see the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"
- 8Abraham replied, "My son, God will provide himself a lamb for the burnt offering." The two of them continued walking together.
- 9When they arrived at the place God had directed him to, Abraham constructed an altar and arranged the wood on it. Then he tied up his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, on top of the wood.
- 10Abraham reached out his hand and picked up the knife to kill his son.
- 11But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" He answered, "Here I am."
- 12The angel said, "Do not lay your hand on the boy, and do not do anything to harm him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not held back your son, your only son, from me."
- 13Abraham looked up and noticed a ram behind him, its horns tangled in a thicket. He went over, took the ram, and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son.
- 14Abraham named that place Jehovahjireh. To this day people say, "On the mount of the LORD it shall be seen."
- 15The angel of the LORD called out to Abraham from heaven a second time
- 16and said, "I have sworn by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not held back your son, your only son,
- 17I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your seed like the stars of the heaven and the sand on the seashore. Your seed will possess the gate of his enemies.
- 18Through your descendants, all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice."
- 19Then Abraham went back to his servants, and together they traveled to Beersheba. Abraham settled in Beersheba.
- 20After these events, Abraham received news: "Milcah has also given birth to children for your brother Nahor."
- 21They were Huz, the firstborn, his brother Buz, and Kemuel, who became the father of Aram,
- 22along with Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.
- 23Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. These eight sons Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother.
- 24Nahor's concubine, whose name was Reumah, also gave birth to Tebah, Gaham, Thahash, and Maachah.
