- 1Abraham married another woman, whose name was Keturah.
- 2She gave him six sons: Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
- 3Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. Dedan's descendants were the Asshurim, the Letushim, and the Leummim.
- 4Midian's sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abidah, and Eldaah. All of these were Keturah's descendants.
- 5Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac.
- 6However, while Abraham was still alive, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from Isaac to settle in lands to the east.
- 7Abraham lived a total of one hundred seventy-five years.
- 8Abraham breathed his last and passed away at a very old age, having lived a long and full life, and he was gathered to his people.
- 9His sons Isaac and Ishmael laid him to rest in the cave of Machpelah, in the field that belonged to Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, across from Mamre.
- 10This was the field Abraham had bought from the sons of Heth. Abraham was buried there alongside his wife Sarah.
- 11After Abraham died, God blessed his son Isaac. Isaac was living near the well Lahairoi.
- 12Here is the account of Ishmael, the son Abraham had through Hagar the Egyptian, who was Sarah's servant.
- 13These are Ishmael's sons, listed by name in the order they were born: Nebajoth was Ishmael's firstborn, followed by Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
- 14Mishma, Dumah, Massa,
- 15Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
- 16These were Ishmael's sons, and these were their names, organized by their settlements and encampments — twelve princes over their respective tribes.
- 17Ishmael lived one hundred thirty-seven years. Then he breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his people.
- 18They lived from Havilah to Shur, which is before Egypt as you go toward Assyria, and he died in the presence of all his brothers.
- 19This is the account of Isaac, Abraham's son. Abraham was the father of Isaac.
- 20Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian from Padanaram and the sister of Laban the Syrian.
- 21Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, since she could not have children. The LORD answered his prayer, and Rebekah became pregnant.
- 22The babies jostled each other inside her, and she said, "Why is this happening to me?" So she went to seek an answer from the LORD.
- 23The LORD told her, "Two nations are inside your womb, and two peoples will be divided from within you. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger."
- 24When the time came for her to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb.
- 25The first one emerged red and covered with hair, like a fur garment, so they named him Esau.
- 26Right after that, his brother came out gripping Esau's heel, so they named him Jacob. Isaac was threescore years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.
- 27As the boys grew up, Esau became a skilled hunter who loved the open country, while Jacob was a quiet man who preferred staying among the tents.
- 28Isaac favored Esau because he enjoyed eating his game, but Rebekah favored Jacob.
- 29One day Jacob was cooking stew when Esau came in from the open country, exhausted.
- 30Esau said to Jacob, "Please, let me have some of that red stew — I'm exhausted!" That is why he was also called Edom.
- 31Jacob replied, "Sell me your birthright today."
- 32Esau said, "Look, I'm about to die. What good is a birthright to me?"
- 33Jacob said, "Swear an oath to me right now." So Esau swore an oath and sold his birthright to Jacob.
- 34Jacob then gave Esau bread and lentil stew. Esau ate and drank, got up, and left. In this way, Esau treated his birthright with contempt.
