- 1When Isaac had grown old and his eyesight had failed so that he could no longer see, he called for his older son Esau and said, "My son." Esau replied, "I'm here."
- 2Isaac said, "Look, I have become old. I don't know when I will die.
- 3"So please, get your hunting gear — your quiver and your bow — and go out into the open country and hunt some wild game for me.
- 4"Then prepare a delicious meal for me, the kind I enjoy, and bring it to me so I can eat, and my soul may bless you before I die."
- 5Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So Esau left for the open country to hunt wild game and bring it back.
- 6Rebekah said to her son Jacob, "Listen, I overheard your father talking to your brother Esau, saying,
- 7"'Bring me wild game and prepare a delicious meal for me to eat, so that I may bless you in the presence of the LORD before I die.'
- 8"Now, my son, listen carefully and do exactly what I tell you.
- 9"Go to the flock and bring me two choice young goats. I will prepare them into a delicious meal for your father, just the way he loves it.
- 10"Then you will take it to your father so he can eat, and so he will bless you before he dies."
- 11Jacob said to his mother Rebekah, "But Esau my brother has a lot of hair on his body, and my skin is smooth.
- 12"What if my father touches me? He would realize I'm trying to trick him, and I would bring a curse on myself instead of a blessing."
- 13His mother replied, "Let any curse fall on me, my son. Just do what I say and go get the goats for me."
- 14So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared a delicious meal, just the way his father loved it.
- 15Then Rebekah took the finest clothes belonging to her older son Esau, which she had in the house, and dressed her younger son Jacob in them.
- 16She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goat skins.
- 17Then she handed the delicious meal and the bread she had prepared to her son Jacob.
- 18He went to his father and said, "My father." Isaac answered, "Yes, I'm here. Which of my sons are you?"
- 19Jacob told his father, "I am Esau, your firstborn. I have done what you asked. Please, sit up and eat some of my wild game so that your soul may bless me."
- 20Isaac asked his son, "How did you find it so fast, my son?" He answered, "Because the LORD your God led it right to me."
- 21Then Isaac said to Jacob, "Come closer, please, so I can touch you, my son, and know whether you really are my son Esau or not."
- 22Jacob moved closer to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, "The voice sounds like Jacob's voice, but the hands feel like Esau's hands."
- 23He did not recognize him because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau's hands. So he blessed him.
- 24He asked again, "Are you really my son Esau?" Jacob answered, "I am."
- 25Isaac said, "Serve it to me, and let me eat my son's wild game so that my soul may bless you." Jacob brought it close, and Isaac ate. He also brought him wine, and he drank.
- 26Then his father Isaac said to him, "Come close now and kiss me, my son."
- 27So he came close and kissed him. When Isaac caught the scent of his clothes, he blessed him and said, "Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed.
- 28"May God give you the dew of heaven and the richness of the earth, and an abundance of grain and wine.
- 29"May peoples serve you and nations bow down before you. Be lord over your brothers, and may your mother's sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed be everyone who blesses you."
- 30As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had barely left his father Isaac's presence, his brother Esau returned from his hunt.
- 31He too prepared a delicious meal and brought it to his father. He said to his father, "Father, please sit up and eat some of your son's wild game, so that your soul may bless me."
- 32His father Isaac asked him, "Who are you?" He replied, "I am your son, your firstborn, Esau."
- 33Isaac began to tremble violently and said, "Then who was it that hunted wild game and brought it to me? I ate it all before you arrived and blessed him — and indeed, he will remain blessed."
- 34When Esau heard his father's words, he burst out with a loud and extremely bitter cry and said to his father, "Bless me — bless me too, my father!"
- 35Isaac replied, "Your brother came with deceit and has taken your blessing."
- 36Esau said, "Isn't his name rightly called Jacob? He has cheated me twice now: he took my birthright, and now look, he has taken my blessing." Then he asked, "Haven't you kept back even one blessing for me?"
- 37Isaac answered Esau, "Look, I have made him lord over you and given him all his brothers as servants. I have provided him with grain and wine. What is left that I can do for you, my son?"
- 38Esau said to his father, "Do you only have one blessing, my father? Bless me — bless me too, my father!" Then Esau raised his voice and wept.
- 39His father Isaac answered him, "Look, your dwelling will be away from the richness of the earth, and away from the dew of heaven above.
- 40"You will live by your sword, and you will serve your brother. But when you grow restless, you will tear his yoke from your neck."
- 41Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. Esau said to himself, "The time to mourn my father's death is near; after that, I will kill my brother Jacob."
- 42When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and told him, "Listen, your brother Esau is consoling himself with plans to kill you.
- 43"So now, my son, do what I say: get up and escape to my brother Laban in Haran.
- 44"Stay with him for a while, until your brother's rage subsides —
- 45"until your brother's anger toward you fades and he forgets what you did to him. Then I will send word and bring you back from there. Why should I lose both of you in a single day?"
- 46Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am sick of living because of these Hittite women. If Jacob marries one of the Hittite women from this land, like these local girls, what reason would I have to go on living?"
