- 1Jacob looked up and saw Esau approaching with four hundred men. So he separated the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two servant women.
- 2He placed the servant women and their children at the front, Leah and her children behind them, and Rachel and Joseph at the very back.
- 3He himself went ahead of them all, bowing down to the ground seven times as he drew close to his brother.
- 4Esau rushed toward him, threw his arms around him, hugged his neck, and kissed him, and they wept.
- 5Then Esau looked up and noticed the women and children. He asked, "Who are all these people with you?" Jacob replied, "They are the children that God has graciously given to your servant."
- 6The servant women came forward with their children and bowed down.
- 7Leah also came forward with her children and bowed down. Then Joseph and Rachel approached and bowed down as well.
- 8Esau asked, "What was the purpose of all those herds I encountered along the way?" Jacob answered, "They were meant to find grace in the eyes of my lord."
- 9Esau said, "I already have plenty, my brother. Keep what belongs to you."
- 10But Jacob said, "No, please, if I have found grace in your sight, then receive my present from my hand, because I have seen your face as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me."
- 11Please take my blessing that was brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me and I have enough. He urged him, and he took it.
- 12Esau said, "Let's set out on our way together, and I will travel ahead of you."
- 13But Jacob replied, "My lord knows that the children are young, and I have nursing flocks and herds to care for. If they are driven too hard for even a single day, all the animals will die."
- 14"Please go on ahead of your servant, and I will move along slowly at a pace the livestock and the children can handle, until I reach my lord in Seir."
- 15Esau said, "Then at least let me leave some of my men with you." But Jacob replied, "There is no need for that. Just let me find grace in the sight of my lord."
- 16So Esau started back toward Seir that same day.
- 17Jacob traveled to Succoth, where he built a house for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is named Succoth.
- 18Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, in the land of Canaan, after his journey from Padanaram, and set up his tent near the city.
- 19He purchased the piece of land where he had pitched his tent from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for a hundred pieces of money.
- 20He set up an altar there and named it EleloheIsrael.
