  5. 5"My father made me swear an oath, saying, 'I am about to die. Bury me in the tomb that I dug for myself in the land of Canaan.' So please let me go up and bury my father, and then I will return."
  6. 6Pharaoh replied, "Go and bury your father, just as he made you swear to do."
  7. 7So Joseph traveled up to bury his father. All of Pharaoh's officials, the senior members of his household, and all the elders of Egypt went with him,
  8. 8along with Joseph's entire household, his brothers, and his father's household. Only their young children, their flocks, and their herds remained behind in the land of Goshen.

  14. 14After burying his father, Joseph went back to Egypt, together with his brothers and everyone who had gone up with him for the burial.
  15. 15Now that their father was dead, Joseph's brothers became afraid. They said, "What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrong we did to him?"
  16. 16So they sent word to Joseph, saying, "Before your father died, he gave this instruction:
  17. 17So you shall say to Joseph, "Please forgive now the trespass of your brothers and their sin, for they did evil to you." And now, we ask you to forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father. Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
  18. 18Then his brothers came in person and bowed down before him. They said, "We are your servants."
  19. 19But Joseph told them, "Do not be afraid. Am I in the place of God?
  20. 20"You planned to harm me, but God intended it for good, so that what is happening today would come about — the survival of many people.
  21. 21"So do not be afraid. I will provide for you and your little ones." He reassured them and spoke to them with kindness.
