  1. 1I will take my position on the watchtower and stand guard at my post. I will watch to see what the LORD will say to me and how I should respond when I am corrected.
  2. 2The LORD answered me: "Write down the vision and make it clear on tablets, so that whoever reads it may run."
  3. 3For the vision is for a future time, and at the end it will speak and not lie. Though it may take time, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not delay.
  4. 4"Look — the one whose soul is puffed up with pride has no integrity. But the righteous person will live by his faith."
  5. 5Indeed, because he sins through wine, he is a proud man who does not stay at home. He enlarges his desire like hell and is like death, never satisfied, gathering all nations to himself and collecting all peoples.
  6. 6Won't all these conquered nations take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, 'Woe to him who piles up what isn't his! How long will this go on? And to him who loads himself with thick clay!'
  7. 7Will not those who will bite you rise up suddenly, and those who will trouble you awaken? You will become plunder for them.
  8. 8Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the people will plunder you, because of men's blood, and the violence of the land, of the city, and of all who live in it.
  9. 9Woe to him who desires unjust gain for his house, setting his nest on high, thinking he can be delivered from the power of evil!
  10. 10"By wiping out many peoples, you've brought shame on your own household and sinned against your own soul."
  11. 11For the stone will cry out from the wall, and the beam from the timber will answer it.
  12. 12Woe to him who builds a town with blood, and establishes a city by iniquity!
  13. 13Look, isn't it from the LORD of hosts that the people labor in the fire, and they tire themselves out for sheer futility?
  14. 14"For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, the way water fills the sea."
  15. 15Woe to him who gives his neighbor drink, putting his bottle to him and making him drunk, so that he may look on their nakedness!
  16. 16You are filled with shame instead of glory. Drink also, and let your foreskin be uncovered. The cup of the LORD's right hand will be turned to you, and shameful vomit will be on your glory.
  17. 17For the violence of Lebanon shall cover you, and the plunder of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men's blood, and for the violence against the land, the city, and all who live there.
  18. 18What good is the carved image that its maker has carved, or the molten image, a teacher of lies, that the maker trusts in to create mute idols?
  19. 19Woe to him who says to the wood, 'Awake!' and to the silent stone, 'Arise, it shall teach!' Look, it is covered with gold and silver, but there is no breath at all inside it.
  20. 20But the LORD is in his holy temple. Let the whole earth be silent before him."
