  1. 1The law is only a shadow of the good things to come, not the exact image of those things. Therefore, the sacrifices offered year after year can never make those who approach perfect.
  2. 2For then would they not have stopped being offered? Because the worshippers, once cleansed, would no longer have a conscience of sins.
  3. 3But those sacrifices are a yearly reminder of sins.
  4. 4It is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
  5. 5Therefore, when he came into the world, he said, "You did not desire sacrifices and offerings, but you prepared a body for me."
  6. 6Burnt offerings and sin offerings gave you no pleasure.
  7. 7Then I said, 'Here I am — it is written about me in the scroll — I have come to do your will, O God.'"
  8. 8First he said, "You didn't want sacrifices, offerings, burnt offerings, or sin offerings, and they gave you no pleasure" — even though the law required them.
  9. 9Then he said, "Here I am — I have come to do your will, O God." He takes away the first to establish the second.
  10. 10And it is through that will that we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
  11. 11Every priest stands day after day performing his duties, offering the same sacrifices over and over—sacrifices that can never take away sins.
  12. 12But Christ, after offering one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.
  13. 13Since that time, he has been waiting for his enemies to be made his footstool.
  14. 14For by one offering, he has perfected forever those who are sanctified.
  15. 15The Holy Spirit also bears witness to us. First he said,
  16. 16"This is the covenant I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds."
  17. 17Then he adds, "I will remember their sins and their lawless acts no more."
  18. 18Now where sins have been forgiven, there is no longer an offering for sin.
  19. 19Therefore, brothers and sisters, because of the blood of Jesus, we can boldly enter the Most Holy Place.
  20. 20He opened a new and living way for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh.
  21. 21And since we have a great high priest over the house of God,
  22. 22let us come close to God with sincere hearts and complete confidence in our faith, our hearts cleansed from a guilty conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
  23. 23Let us firmly hold on to the profession of our faith without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.
  24. 24And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works.
  25. 25Don't stop meeting together, as some have gotten into the habit of doing. Instead, keep encouraging each other — and all the more as you see the Day getting closer.
  26. 26For if we sin willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice for sins remaining,
  27. 27only a terrifying expectation of judgment and a raging fire that will consume the adversaries.
  28. 28Anyone who despised the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
  29. 29How much worse do you think the punishment will be for someone who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, considered the blood of the covenant that made them holy an unholy thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
  30. 30We know the one who said, "Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay," says the LORD. And again, "The LORD will judge his people."
  31. 31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
  32. 32But remember those early days after you first received the light — how you endured a fierce struggle of suffering.
  33. 33Sometimes you were made a public spectacle through insults and afflictions; other times you became companions of those who were so treated.
  34. 34For you had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing in yourselves that you have in heaven a better and enduring possession.
  35. 35So don't throw away your confidence — it carries a great reward.
  36. 36You need endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.
  37. 37"In just a little while, the one who is coming will come and will not delay.
  38. 38The righteous will live by faith. But if anyone shrinks back, my soul takes no pleasure in them."
  39. 39But we are not among those who shrink back to destruction, but among those who have faith to the saving of the soul.
