  1. 1How terrible it will be for Ariel, Ariel, the city where David lived! Add year to year; let them kill sacrifices.
  2. 2But I will bring distress on Ariel, and there will be mourning and sorrow. It will be to me as Ariel.
  3. 3I will surround you on every side and lay siege against you. I will set up siege towers against you.

  5. 5Moreover, the multitude of your strangers will be like fine dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones will be like chaff that passes away: yes, it will happen suddenly, in an instant.
  6. 6You will be visited by the LORD of hosts with thunder, earthquake, and great noise, with storm, tempest, and flames of consuming fire.

  8. 8It will be like a starving man who dreams he's eating, but wakes up and his soul is empty. Or like a thirsty man who dreams he's drinking, but wakes up faint and his soul has an appetite. That's what will happen to all the nations that fight against Mount Zion.
  9. 9Pause and be amazed; cry out and shout: they are drunk, but not with wine; they stagger, but not from strong drink.
  10. 10The LORD has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep. He has closed your eyes—the prophets—and covered your rulers, the seers.
  11. 11Every vision has become to you like the words of a sealed scroll. When someone hands it to an educated person and says, "Please read this," he answers, "I can't — it's sealed."
  12. 12And when the scroll is handed to someone who can't read, and they're told, "Please read this," he answers, "I don't know how to read."
  13. 13The Lord said, "These people come close to me with their words and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their fear of me is taught by human rules."
  14. 14Therefore, look: I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, a marvelous work and a wonder. For the wisdom of their wise men will perish, and the understanding of their prudent men will be hidden.
  15. 15Woe to those who go to great lengths to hide their plans from the LORD, who do their work in the dark and say, 'Who sees us? Who knows us?'
  16. 16You turn things upside down as if the potter were like the clay. Can the work say to its maker, 'He didn't make me'? Or can the thing formed say to the one who formed it, 'He has no understanding'?
  17. 17Is it not just a little while until Lebanon will be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field will be regarded as a forest?
  18. 18On that day, the deaf will hear the words of the scroll, and the eyes of the blind will see through the gloom and darkness.
  19. 19The meek will also increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among people will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
