"So tell them this message: 'The LORD, the God of Israel, says: Every jar should be filled with wine.' They'll respond, 'Obviously! Don't we already know that every jar should be filled with wine?'
Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word; Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Every bottle shall be filled with wine: and they shall say unto thee, Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine?
Verse Analysis
Plain-English insight for readers
In Jeremiah 13:12, God instructs the prophet to deliver a straightforward message about wine being poured into jars. This metaphor highlights the expectation that people should understand basic truths. The response from the people indicates their awareness of this fact, suggesting a deeper issue: their failure to grasp the spiritual significance behind God's message. The jars and wine symbolize the people of Israel and their relationship with God. Just as jars are meant to be filled, the people are meant to be filled with God's presence and purpose. However, their indifference to God's warnings shows a disconnect between knowledge and action. This passage serves as a reminder that understanding God's word is not enough; it must lead to a transformation in behavior and faithfulness to Him.

The Book of Jeremiah
Jeremiah 1: The Call of Jeremiah
The words of Jeremiah, son of Hilkiah, a priest from Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, are recorded. The word of the LORD comes to him in the thirteenth year of King Josiah's reign over Judah. It continues to come to him through the reign of King Jehoiakim and until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah, when Jerusalem is carried into captivity. The LORD states that before He formed Jeremiah in the womb, He knew him and ordained him as a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah responds that he cannot speak because he is a child. The LORD commands him not to say he is a child, for he will go where the LORD sends him and speak what the LORD commands.
