  1. 1This is the message that came to Jeremiah from the LORD when King Zedekiah sent Pashur son of Melchiah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to him with this request:
  2. 2Please ask the LORD on our behalf, for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon is waging war against us. Perhaps the LORD will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, so that he may leave us.
  3. 3Jeremiah answered them, "Go back and tell Zedekiah this:
  4. 4The LORD, the God of Israel, says: I will turn back the weapons of war in your hands, which you use to fight against the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the walls, and I will gather them into the midst of this city.
  5. 5I myself will fight against you with my mighty, outstretched arm, with anger, fury, and great wrath.
  6. 6I will strike down everyone living in this city, both people and animals. They will die from a terrible plague.
  7. 7Afterward, declares the LORD, I will deliver King Zedekiah of Judah, his servants, and the people who survive the plague, the sword, and the famine in this city into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and those who seek their lives. He will strike them down with the sword; he will not spare them, nor have pity, nor show mercy.
  8. 8"Then tell the people this: 'The LORD says: Look — I am giving you a choice between life and death.
  9. 9Anyone who stays in this city will die by the sword, by famine, or by plague. But anyone who leaves and surrenders to the Chaldeans besieging you will survive, and their life will be like a prize to them.
  10. 10I have turned against this city for evil, and not for good,' declares the LORD. 'It will be handed over to the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.'
  11. 11"Now, regarding the royal house of Judah — listen to the word of the LORD:
  12. 12House of David, this is what the LORD says: Carry out judgment in the morning, and rescue the one who has been robbed from the hand of the oppressor, or my fury will go out like fire and burn so that no one can put it out, because of the evil of your doings.
  13. 13I am against you, you who sit in the valley, on the rock above the plain,' declares the LORD. 'You say, "Who could possibly attack us? Who could break into our stronghold?"
  14. 14But I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings,' declares the LORD. 'I will kindle a fire in the forest, and it will devour everything around it.'
