- 1In the 7th month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, grandson of Elishama, came to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. Ishmael was of royal blood and had been one of the king's chief officers. He brought 10 men with him, and they sat down to eat a meal together at Mizpah.
- 2Then Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the 10 men with him stood up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, grandson of Shaphan, with their swords. They killed the man the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.
- 3Ishmael also killed all the Jews who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, along with the Chaldeans found there, and the men of war.
- 4The day after Gedaliah was murdered, before anyone had found out what happened,
- 5Eighty men arrived from Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria. They had shaved their beards, torn their clothes, and cut themselves. They were carrying offerings and incense to bring to the house of the LORD.
- 6Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he walked. When he reached them, he said, "Come with me to Gedaliah son of Ahikam."
- 7But once they were inside the city, Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, along with the men who were with him, killed them and threw them into the middle of the pit.
- 8However, ten men pleaded with Ishmael, saying, "Don't kill us, for we have treasures in the field—wheat, barley, oil, and honey." So he spared them and did not kill them along with their companions.
- 9The pit where Ishmael had thrown all the dead bodies of the men he killed because of Gedaliah was the one King Asa had made for fear of Baasha, king of Israel. Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, filled it with those who were slain.
- 10Then Ishmael took captive everyone who was left in Mizpah — including the king's daughters and all the people that Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, had placed under Gedaliah's care. Ishmael son of Nethaniah seized them all and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.
- 11When Johanan son of Kareah and all the military commanders with him heard about everything Ishmael son of Nethaniah had done,
- 12they gathered all their men and went after Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They caught up with him at the great pool in Gibeon.
- 13When all the people with Ishmael saw Johanan son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces with him, they were glad.
- 14All the people Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah broke away from him and ran over to Johanan son of Kareah.
- 15But Ishmael son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with 8 of his men and fled to the Ammonites.
- 16Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces with him took all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah from Mizpah, after he had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam — the mighty men of war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gibeon.
- 17They left and stayed at the habitation of Chimham near Bethlehem, intending to continue on to Egypt.
- 18They were afraid of the Babylonians, because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam — the governor the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.
