- 1Zedekiah was 21 years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for 11 years. His mother's name was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.
- 2He did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD, according to all that Jehoiakim had done.
- 3It was because of the LORD's anger that all of this happened to Jerusalem and Judah, until he finally drove them out of his presence. Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
- 4In the 9th year of Zedekiah's reign, on the 10th day of the 10th month, King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his entire army. They set up camp around the city and built siege walls on every side.
- 5The siege lasted until the 11th year of King Zedekiah's reign.
- 6By the ninth day of the fourth month, the famine in the city was so severe that there was no bread for the people of the land.
- 7Then the city wall was breached, and all the soldiers fled at night through the gate between the two walls near the king's garden, even though the Chaldeans surrounded the city. They escaped by way of the plain.
- 8But the Chaldean army chased after the king and caught up with Zedekiah on the plains of Jericho, and all his army was scattered from him.
- 9They captured the king and brought him to Nebuchadrezzar at Riblah in the land of Hamath, where the king of Babylon pronounced judgment on him.
- 10The king of Babylon slaughtered Zedekiah's sons right in front of him. He also executed all the officials of Judah there at Riblah.
- 11Then he gouged out Zedekiah's eyes, bound him in bronze chains, and took him to Babylon, where he was kept in prison until the day he died.
- 12On the 10th day of the 5th month — the 19th year of King Nebuchadrezzar's reign — Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard who served the king of Babylon, entered Jerusalem.
- 13He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace, and every house in Jerusalem. Every important building was set on fire.
- 14The entire Chaldean army under the captain of the guard tore down all the walls surrounding Jerusalem.
- 15Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, then took into exile some of the poorest people, the rest of the population still in the city, those who had deserted to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the multitude.
- 16But Nebuzaradan left behind some of the poorest people in the land to tend the vineyards and work the fields.
- 17The Chaldeans broke apart the bronze pillars in the house of the LORD, along with the bronze stands and the bronze sea. They hauled all the bronze off to Babylon.
- 18They also took the pots, shovels, wick trimmers, bowls, ladles, and every bronze utensil used in temple worship.
- 19The captain of the guard carried off the cups, fire pans, basins, pots, lampstands, ladles, and drink offering bowls — everything made of gold and everything made of silver.
- 20The two pillars, one sea, and twelve bronze bulls that were under the bases, which King Solomon had made in the house of the LORD — the bronze of all these vessels was beyond weighing.
- 21Each pillar stood 18 cubits tall with a circumference of 12 cubits. The bronze was 4 fingers thick, and the pillar was hollow inside.
- 22On top of each pillar sat a bronze capital 5 cubits high, decorated all around with a network of bronze pomegranates. The second pillar was identical, with the same pomegranate design.
- 23There were 96 pomegranates on the sides, and 100 pomegranates in all around the network.
- 24The captain of the guard arrested Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the priest next in rank, and the 3 doorkeepers of the temple.
- 25He also took from the city a eunuch who was in charge of the men of war, and seven men who were close to the king, who were found in the city; and the principal scribe of the army, who mustered the people of the land; and sixty men of the people of the land, who were found in the midst of the city.
- 26Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard took all of them and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah.
- 27There at Riblah in the land of Hamath, the king of Babylon had them struck down and executed. And so Judah was carried away from its homeland into exile.
- 28Here is the count of people Nebuchadrezzar took into exile: in the 7th year of his reign, 3,023 Jews;
- 29in the 18th year of Nebuchadrezzar, 832 people from Jerusalem;
- 30and in the 23rd year of Nebuchadrezzar, Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard took 745 more Jews into exile. The total number of exiles was 4,600.
- 31In the 37th year of King Jehoiachin of Judah's exile, on the 25th day of the 12th month, King Evilmerodach of Babylon, in the 1st year of his reign, lifted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah and released him from prison.
- 32He spoke kindly to Jehoiachin and gave him a seat of honor above the other exiled kings who were in Babylon.
- 33He changed Jehoiachin's prison clothes, and Jehoiachin ate meals before the king every day for the rest of his life.
- 34The king of Babylon provided him with a daily allowance for as long as he lived, right up until the day he died.
