- 1Then Job answered and said:
- 2"Yes, I know this is true. But how can a man be just before God?
- 3If he wished to contend with him, he could not answer him one time out of a thousand.
- 4He is wise in heart and mighty in strength — who has hardened himself against him and prospered?
- 5He removes mountains, and they don't know it; he overturns them in his anger.
- 6He shakes the earth from its place, and its pillars tremble.
- 7He commands the sun, and it does not rise; he seals up the stars.
- 8He alone spreads out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.
- 9He makes Arcturus, Orion, and the Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.
- 10He does great things past finding out, and wonders without number.
- 11Look, he goes by me, and I don't see him; he passes on, but I don't perceive him.
- 12Look, he takes away — who can hinder him? Who will say to him, 'What are you doing?'
- 13If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers stoop under him.
- 14How much less could I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
- 15Even if I were righteous, I would not answer him; I would make supplication to my judge.
- 16Even if I called and he answered me, I would not believe that he had listened to my voice.
- 17For he breaks me with a tempest and multiplies my wounds without cause.
- 18He will not allow me to catch my breath, but fills me with bitterness.
- 19If it is a matter of strength, look, he is strong! And if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?
- 20If I justify myself, my own mouth will condemn me. If I say I am perfect, it will also prove me perverse.
- 21Though I were perfect, yet I would not know my soul; I would despise my life.
- 22This is one thing; therefore I said it: he destroys the blameless and the wicked.
- 23If the scourge kills suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.
- 24The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covers the faces of its judges. If not he, then who is it?
- 25Now my days are swifter than a courier; they flee away, they see no good.
- 26They pass by like swift ships, like an eagle that swoops on its prey.
- 27If I say, 'I will forget my complaint, I will put off my heaviness and comfort myself' —
- 28I am afraid of all my sorrows; I know that you will not hold me innocent.
- 29If I am wicked, why then do I labor in vain?
- 30Even if I washed myself with snow water and made my hands never so clean,
- 31yet you would plunge me into the ditch, and my own clothes would abhor me.
- 32For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.
- 33There is no daysman between us, who might lay his hand on us both.
- 34Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me —
- 35then I would speak and not fear him. But it is not so with me."
