  1. 1Sound the trumpet in Zion! Blast the alarm on my holy mountain! Let everyone in the land tremble, because the day of the LORD is coming — it's almost here.
  2. 2It will be a day of darkness and gloom, a day of heavy clouds and deep shadow. Like dawn spreading across the mountains, a massive and powerful army approaches. Nothing like it has ever existed before, and nothing like it will ever come again for generations upon generations.
  3. 3Fire devours everything ahead of them, and flames burn everything behind them. Before they arrive, the land looks like the garden of Eden. After they pass through, it's a ruined wasteland. Nothing escapes them.
  4. 4They look like horses, and they charge like cavalry.
  5. 5They leap across the mountaintops with a sound like rumbling chariots, like the roar of fire consuming dry stubble — like a mighty army lined up for battle.
  6. 6Before them, the people are in great pain; all faces grow dark.
  7. 7They charge like warriors. They scale walls like soldiers. Each one marches in formation, never breaking ranks.
  8. 8No one will push another. Each will walk in his own path. When they fall upon the sword, they will not be wounded.
  9. 9They swarm through the city. They race along the walls. They climb into houses and slip through windows like thieves.
  10. 10The earth shakes before them. The heavens tremble. The sun and moon go dark, and the stars stop shining.
  11. 11The LORD thunders his voice at the head of his army. His forces are beyond counting, and the one who carries out his command is mighty. The day of the LORD is great and utterly terrifying — who can endure it?
  12. 12"But even now," declares the LORD, "come back to me with all your heart — with fasting, weeping, and mourning."
  13. 13Tear your heart, and not your clothes, and turn to the LORD your God. For he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and he turns from the evil.
  14. 14Who knows if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him—grain offerings and drink offerings for the LORD your God?
  15. 15Sound the trumpet in Zion! Declare a holy fast. Call everyone together for a solemn assembly.
  16. 16Gather all the people. Set the congregation apart as holy. Bring together the elders. Gather even the little children and nursing infants. Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride leave hers.
  17. 17Let the priests who serve the LORD weep between the temple porch and the altar. Let them pray, "Spare your people, LORD! Don't let your own people become an object of scorn. Don't let the nations rule over them. Why should the peoples say, 'Where is their God?'"
  18. 18Then the LORD will be jealous for his land and will pity his people.
  19. 19The LORD answered his people, "Look — I am sending you grain, new wine, and olive oil. You will have more than enough. I will never again make you an object of mockery among the nations.
  20. 20But I will remove the northern army far from you, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his rear toward the farthest sea. His stink will come up, and his foul smell will come up, because he has done great things.
  21. 21Don't be afraid, O land! Be glad and celebrate, because the LORD has done great things.
  22. 22Don't be afraid, you wild animals, because the open pastures are turning green again. The trees are bearing fruit. The fig trees and grapevines are producing abundantly.
  23. 23Celebrate, people of Zion! Rejoice in the LORD your God! He has given you the autumn rains in just the right measure, and he will send both the autumn and spring rains as before.
  24. 24The threshing floors will be heaped with wheat, and the vats will overflow with new wine and olive oil.
  25. 25"I will make up for the years that the swarming locusts devoured — the great locusts, the young locusts, and the crawling locusts — my massive army that I sent against you.
  26. 26You will eat until you're full and satisfied, and you will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has done incredible things for you. My people will never be put to shame again.
  27. 27Then you will know that I am present among Israel, that I am the LORD your God and there is no other. My people will never be put to shame again.
  28. 28And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.
  29. 29And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit.
  30. 30I will display wonders in the heavens and on the earth — blood, fire, and columns of smoke.
  31. 31The sun will turn to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and terrifying day of the LORD arrives.
  32. 32But everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved. On Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, just as the LORD has promised — among the remnant that the LORD calls.
