- 1This made Jonah furious. He was deeply upset about it.
- 2He prayed to the LORD and said, "I beg you, O LORD, isn't this what I said when I was still in my country? That's why I fled to Tarshish, because I knew you are a gracious God, merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and you repent of the evil."
- 3So now, LORD, just take my life. I'd rather die than go on living."
- 4The LORD asked, "Is it right for you to be angry?"
- 5Jonah left the city and sat down on its east side. He built himself a small shelter and sat in its shade, waiting to see what would happen to Nineveh.
- 6Then the LORD God made a vine grow up over Jonah to shade his head and deliver him from his grief. Jonah was thrilled about the vine.
- 7But at dawn the next day, God sent a worm that attacked the vine, and it shriveled up.
- 8When the sun came up, God sent a scorching east wind. The sun blazed down on Jonah's head until he grew faint. He wished he were dead and said, "I'd rather die than go on living."
- 9And God said to Jonah, "Do you do well to be angry about the gourd?" And he replied, "I do well to be angry, even to death."
- 10Then the LORD said, "You have had pity on the vine, which you did not plant or make grow. It came up in a night and perished in a night."
- 11And should I not spare Nineveh, that great city, where there are more than 120,000 people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and also many cattle?
