  1. 1Joshua, son of Nun, secretly sent two men from Shittim to spy, instructing them, 'Go and explore the land, especially Jericho.' They went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab, where they stayed.
  2. 2Someone told the king of Jericho, 'Look, some men from the children of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.'
  3. 3The king of Jericho sent a message to Rahab, saying, 'Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to search the whole land.'
  4. 4And the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, 'Yes, some men came to me, but I did not know where they were from.'
  5. 5Around the time the city gate was closing at dark, the men left. I don't know where they went. If you chase after them quickly, you will catch them.
  6. 6But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them with the stalks of flax she had arranged there.
  7. 7The men chased after them along the road to the Jordan River, heading toward the fords. As soon as the pursuers had left, the gate was shut.
  8. 8Before they lay down, she went up to them on the roof.
  9. 9She said to the men, "I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that terror of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you."
  10. 10We've heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two Amorite kings, Sihon and Og, on the other side of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.
  11. 11As soon as we heard about these things, our hearts melted, and no courage remained in anyone because of you. The LORD your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.
  12. 12So now, please swear to me by the LORD, since I have shown you kindness, that you will also show kindness to my father's house and give me a reliable sign.
  13. 13Promise to spare my father, my mother, my brothers, my sisters, and all who belong to them. Save us from death.
  14. 14The men replied to her, "Our lives for yours, if you do not reveal our mission. When the LORD gives us the land, we will treat you with kindness and faithfulness."
  15. 15Then she lowered them down through a window with a rope, because her house was built into the city wall, and she lived on the wall.
  16. 16She said to them, "Go to the mountain so the pursuers don't find you. Hide there for three days until they return, and then you can go on your way."
  17. 17The men said to her, "We will be free from blame regarding this oath of yours, which you made us swear."
  18. 18"When we enter the land, tie this scarlet cord in the window you lowered us from. Bring your father, your mother, your brothers, and your father's entire household together inside your house.
  19. 19Anyone who goes out of your house into the street will be responsible for their own death, and we will not be guilty. But if anyone inside your house is harmed, we will be responsible for their death.
  20. 20But if you reveal our mission, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.
  21. 21She agreed, "Let it be exactly as you've said." Then she sent them on their way, and as soon as they left, she tied the scarlet cord in the window.
  22. 22They went to the mountain and stayed there for three days until the pursuers returned. The pursuers searched for them along the way but did not find them.
  23. 23Then the two men came down from the mountain, crossed over, and went to Joshua son of Nun. They told him everything that had happened to them.
  24. 24They said to Joshua, "Truly, the LORD has delivered all the land into our hands, for all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us."
