- 1A long time later, after the LORD had given Israel rest from all their surrounding enemies, Joshua had become very old.
- 2Joshua called all Israel, including their elders, leaders, judges, and officers, and said to them, "I am old and advanced in age."
- 3You have seen all that the LORD your God has done to these nations because of you, for the LORD your God is the one who fought for you.
- 4Look, I have allotted to you these remaining nations as an inheritance for your tribes, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea in the west, including all the nations I have cut off.
- 5The LORD your God will force them out ahead of you and drive them from your land. You will take possession of their territory, just as the LORD your God promised you.
- 6So be very courageous to obey everything written in the book of the law of Moses, and do not turn aside from it to the right or to the left.
- 7Do not associate with the nations that remain among you. Do not mention the names of their gods, swear by them, serve them, or bow down to them.
- 8But hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have done until this day.
- 9The LORD has driven out great and strong nations before you. To this day, no one has been able to stand against you.
- 10One of you can put a thousand to flight, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as he promised.
- 11Be very careful, therefore, to love the LORD your God.
- 12But if you turn back and cling to the remaining nations among you, intermarrying with them and becoming closely connected—
- 13then know for certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive these nations out ahead of you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, scourges in your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you disappear from this good land the LORD your God has given you.
- 14Look, today I am going the way of all the earth. You know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things the LORD your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you, and not one thing among them has failed.
- 15But just as every good thing he promised has happened, the LORD will also bring every disaster he warned about, until he has wiped you out from this good land the LORD your God gave you —
- 16if you break the covenant of the LORD your God that he commanded you to keep, and go off to serve other gods and bow down to them. Then the LORD's anger will burn against you, and you will quickly be destroyed from this good land he gave you."
