- 1There was a man named Micah who lived in the hill country of Ephraim.
- 2He said to his mother, "The 1,100 shekels of silver that were taken from you, about which you cursed and spoke in my hearing—look, the silver is with me. I took it." His mother said, "Blessed are you of the LORD, my son."
- 3When he returned the 1,100 shekels of silver to his mother, she said, "I had wholly dedicated this silver to the LORD for my son, to make a carved image and a cast idol. Now, I will give it back to you."
- 4But when he handed the money back to his mother, she took two hundred shekels of silver and gave them to a silversmith, who used them to make a carved image and a cast idol, and they were in the house of Micah.
- 5Micah had a house of gods. He made an ephod and teraphim, and consecrated one of his sons to be his priest.
- 6In those days Israel had no king, so everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
- 7Now there was a young man from Bethlehem in Judah, of the family of Judah, who was a Levite and stayed there temporarily.
- 8This man left Bethlehem in Judah to find somewhere else to settle. During his travels, he arrived at Micah's house in the hill country of Ephraim.
- 9Micah asked him, "Where are you coming from?" The man answered, "I'm a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah, and I'm looking for a place to settle down."
- 10Micah said to him, "Stay with me and be a father and a priest to me. I will give you ten shekels of silver a year, a set of clothes, and your meals." So the Levite went in.
- 11The Levite was happy to stay with Micah, and Micah treated the young man like one of his own sons.
- 12Micah consecrated the Levite, and the young man became his priest and lived in Micah's house.
- 13Then Micah said, "Now I know the LORD will be good to me, because I have a Levite serving as my priest."
