Was the baptism of John from heaven, or from men?

KJVKing James Version

The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?

Verse Analysis

Plain-English insight for readers

In this verse, Jesus poses a question to the religious leaders about the origin of John the Baptist's baptism. He asks whether it was divinely inspired ('from heaven') or merely a human tradition ('from men'). This question challenges the authority of the religious leaders, as they must consider the implications of their answer. If they say it was from heaven, they must acknowledge John's authority and, by extension, Jesus' authority, since John pointed to Jesus as the Messiah. Conversely, if they claim it was from men, they risk losing the respect of the people who believed in John as a prophet. This moment highlights the tension between Jesus and the religious authorities, as well as the importance of recognizing divine authority in spiritual matters. It also serves as a reminder that true authority comes from God, not human traditions or opinions.

How to apply Luke 20:4 to your life

This verse encourages us to examine the sources of our beliefs and practices. Are they rooted in divine truth or merely human tradition? We should seek to understand and follow what God reveals, rather than simply adhering to what is popular or accepted by society.

Luke 1: The Births of John the Baptist and Jesus Foretold

In the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a priest named Zacharias serves in the temple. He and his wife Elisabeth are both righteous but have no children because Elisabeth is barren, and they are both old. While Zacharias burns incense, the angel Gabriel appears to him and says Elisabeth will bear a son who is to be named John. The child will be great before the Lord, will drink no wine or strong drink, and will be filled with the Holy Ghost from his mother's womb. He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. Zacharias asks how he can know this, since he and his wife are old. Gabriel says Zacharias will be unable to speak until these things come to pass because he did not believe.
