- 1Look, I am sending my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. The LORD, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant, whom you delight in, is coming," says the LORD of hosts.
- 2But who will be able to endure the day of his coming? Who will stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like launderers' soap.
- 3He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, purifying the sons of Levi and refining them like gold and silver, so they may offer to the LORD an offering in righteousness.
- 4Then the offerings from Judah and Jerusalem will please the LORD again, just like they did in the days of old, in years long past.
- 5I will come to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, adulterers, and false swearers, against those who oppress workers in their wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and those who turn aside the stranger from his rights, and do not fear me," says the LORD of hosts.
- 6For I am the LORD, and I do not change; that is why you descendants of Jacob are not destroyed.
- 7Ever since the days of your ancestors, you have turned away from my ordinances and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you," says the LORD of hosts. "But you ask, 'How shall we return?'
- 8Can a person actually rob God? Yet you are robbing me! You ask, 'How have we robbed you?' Through your tithes and offerings.
- 9You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed me, even this whole nation.
- 10Bring the full tithe into the storehouse so there will be food in my house, and test me in this," says the LORD of hosts, "to see if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing so great that there will not be enough room to receive it.
- 11And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he will not destroy the fruits of your ground; nor will your vine drop its fruit before it is ripe in the field," says the LORD of hosts.
- 12"Every nation will call you blessed, because your land will be a place of delight," says the LORD of hosts.
- 13"You have spoken harsh words against me," says the LORD. "Yet you ask, 'What have we said against you?'
- 14You've said, 'Serving God is pointless. What did we gain by keeping his commands and walking around in mourning before the LORD of hosts?
- 15And now we call the proud happy; yes, those who work wickedness are set up; yes, those who tempt God are even delivered.
- 16Then those who feared the LORD often spoke to one another, and the LORD listened and heard them. A book of remembrance was written before him for those who feared the LORD and thought about his name.
- 17"They will be mine," says the LORD of hosts, "on the day I make up my jewels. I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him."
- 18Then you will see the difference again — the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who don't."
