- 1How miserable I am! I'm like someone searching for fruit after the harvest, like picking through a vineyard after the grapes have been gathered. There's not a single cluster to eat. My soul craves the first ripe fruit.
- 2The godly have vanished from the land, and there isn't an upright person left. Everyone lies in wait to shed blood; they hunt each other down like prey caught in a net.
- 3Their hands are skilled at doing evil. The ruler demands bribes, the judge sells his verdict, and the powerful dictate whatever wickedness they want — and together they scheme to make it happen.
- 4The best of them is like a brier, and the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge. But the day your watchmen warned about — the day of your punishment — has arrived. Now comes their confusion.
- 5Do not trust a friend, do not put confidence in a guide; guard your words even from her who lies in your arms.
- 6Sons treat their fathers with contempt, daughters rebel against their mothers, and daughters-in-law turn against their mothers-in-law. A man's enemies are the people in his own household.
- 7But as for me, I will look to the LORD. I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me.
- 8Don't gloat over me, my enemy. Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.
- 9I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he pleads my cause and executes judgment for me. He will bring me into the light, and I will see his righteousness.
- 10Then my enemy will see it, and shame will cover the one who taunted me, saying, "Where is the LORD your God?" I will watch it happen — she will be trampled like mud in the streets.
- 11The day is coming when your walls will be rebuilt, and on that day the decree will be far removed.
- 12On that day, he will come to you from Assyria, from the fortified cities, from the fortress to the river, from sea to sea, and from mountain to mountain.
- 13But first, the land will become desolate because of the people living in it — the consequence of their actions.
- 14Shepherd your people with your staff, LORD — the flock that belongs to you. They live alone in a forest, surrounded by fertile pastureland. Let them graze in Bashan and Gilead as they did in the days of old.
- 15"Just as I did when you came out of Egypt, I will show them marvelous things."
- 16The nations will see and be confounded by all their might; they will lay their hands on their mouths, and their ears will become deaf.
- 17They will lick the dust like a serpent, crawling out of their hiding places like creatures of the earth. They shall be afraid of the LORD our God, and shall fear because of you.
- 18Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the rebellion of the remnant who belong to him? He does not stay angry forever, because he delights in mercy.
- 19He will turn again and have compassion on us; he will subdue our iniquities; and you will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
- 20You will show faithfulness to Jacob and mercy to Abraham, just as you swore to our ancestors in the days of old.
