  1. 1On the 1st day of the 2nd month, in the 2nd year after Israel left Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the wilderness of Sinai. He said,
  2. 2"Take a census of the entire Israelite community. Count every male individually, organized by their clans and families,
  3. 3everyone 20 years old and older who is able to serve in Israel's army. You and Aaron will count them, organized by their military divisions.
  4. 4One man from each tribe will assist you — each one the head of his family's household.
  5. 5Here are the names of the men who will help you: from the tribe of Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;
  6. 6from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;
  7. 7from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab;
  8. 8from Issachar, Nethaneel son of Zuar;
  9. 9from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon;
  10. 10from the descendants of Joseph: Elishama son of Ammihud for Ephraim, and Gamaliel son of Pedahzur for Manasseh;

  15. 15from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan."
  16. 16These were the renowned leaders of the community, princes of their ancestral tribes, and heads of thousands in Israel.
  17. 17Moses and Aaron took these men who were designated by name.
  18. 18On the first day of the second month, they gathered the entire congregation and declared their family lineage by their fathers' houses, listing the names of those twenty years old and older, individually.
  19. 19Moses counted them in the wilderness of Sinai, just as the LORD had commanded him.
  20. 20The descendants of Reuben, Israel's firstborn, were registered by their clans and families. Every male 20 years old and older who was able to serve in the army was counted individually.
  21. 21The tribe of Reuben totaled 46,500.
  22. 22The descendants of Simeon were registered by their clans and families. Every male 20 years old and older who was able to serve in the army was counted individually.

  45. 45So all those of the children of Israel who were counted by their fathers’ houses, from 20 years old and upward, all who were able to go to war in Israel:
  46. 46The total came to 603,550.
  47. 47The Levites, however, were not included in this count with the rest of the tribes.
  48. 48For the LORD had spoken to Moses, saying,
  49. 49"Do not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the Israelites.
  50. 50Instead, put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Testimony, all its furnishings, and everything that belongs to it. They will carry the tabernacle and all its equipment, take care of it, and set up camp around it.
  51. 51Whenever the tabernacle needs to move, the Levites will take it down. When it's time to set it up, the Levites will do so. Any stranger who comes near it must be put to death.
  52. 52The rest of the Israelites will set up camp in their assigned positions, each man with his own tribal division under his own banner.
  53. 53But the Levites will camp around the Tabernacle of the Testimony so that there is no wrath upon the Israelite community. The Levites are responsible for guarding the Tabernacle of the Testimony.
  54. 54The Israelites did everything exactly as the LORD had commanded Moses.
