- 1The family leaders from the clan of Gilead — who was the son of Machir, son of Manasseh, from the tribe of Joseph — came and presented their case before Moses and the leaders who served as heads of Israel's families.
- 2They said, "The LORD commanded you, my lord, to distribute the land by lot as an inheritance to the people of Israel. You were also commanded by the LORD to give our brother Zelophehad's inheritance to his daughters.
- 3But if they marry men from other Israelite tribes, their land will be transferred away from our ancestral inheritance and added to whatever tribe they marry into. That means our allotted inheritance will shrink.
- 4And when the Year of Jubilee comes for the children of Israel, their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry, and it will be taken away from the inheritance of our ancestral tribe.
- 5Moses gave the people of Israel this instruction from the LORD: "The tribe of Joseph has raised a valid concern.
- 6Here is what the LORD commands regarding Zelophehad's daughters: they may marry anyone they choose, but only within the clans of their father's tribe.
- 7This way, no inheritance among the people of Israel will pass from one tribe to another. Every Israelite must hold on to the land that belongs to their ancestral tribe.
- 8Any woman in Israel who inherits land must marry someone from a clan within her father's tribe. This ensures that every Israelite keeps the inheritance that belonged to their ancestors.
- 9No inheritance is to transfer from one tribe to another. Each tribe of Israel must hold on to its own land."
- 10Zelophehad's daughters did exactly what the LORD commanded through Moses.
- 11Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah — the daughters of Zelophehad — each married cousins on their father's side.
- 12They married within the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph, so their inheritance stayed within their father's tribal family.
- 13These are the commands and regulations that the LORD gave through Moses to the people of Israel while they were camped on the plains of Moab, beside the Jordan River across from Jericho.
