  1. 1The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai during the 1st month of the 2nd year after the Israelites had left Egypt. He said,
  2. 2"The Israelites must celebrate the Passover at its appointed time.
  3. 3On the 14th day of this month, at twilight, you are to observe it at its appointed time. Follow every rule and regulation that goes with it."
  4. 4So Moses told the Israelites to celebrate the Passover.
  5. 5They celebrated it on the 14th day of the 1st month at twilight in the wilderness of Sinai. The Israelites did everything exactly as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  6. 6But some men had become ceremonially unclean from contact with a dead body and couldn't celebrate the Passover on that day. They came to Moses and Aaron
  7. 7and said, "We are unclean because we touched a dead body. Why should we be excluded from presenting the LORD's offering at its appointed time along with the rest of Israel?"
  8. 8Moses told them, "Wait here while I find out what the LORD commands about your situation."
  9. 9The LORD spoke to Moses and said,
  10. 10"Tell the Israelites: 'If any of you or your descendants become unclean from contact with a dead body, or are away on a long journey, you may still celebrate the Passover to the LORD.
  11. 11You must observe it on the 14th day of the 2nd month at twilight. Eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
  12. 12Don't leave any of it until morning, and don't break any of its bones. Follow all the regulations of the Passover when you observe it.
  13. 13But anyone who is clean and not on a journey and still fails to celebrate the Passover — that soul must be cut off from his people. Because he did not present the LORD's offering at its appointed time, that man shall bear his sin.
  14. 14If a foreigner living among you wants to celebrate the Passover to the LORD, he must follow the same rules and regulations. There is one law for everyone — both the foreigner and the native-born.'"
  15. 15On the day the tabernacle was set up, a cloud covered it, specifically the tent of the testimony. That evening, what looked like fire appeared over the tabernacle and remained until morning.
  16. 16This was the ongoing pattern: the cloud covered it during the day, and at night it looked like fire.
  17. 17Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites would break camp and move out. Wherever the cloud settled, that's where the Israelites would set up camp.
  18. 18The Israelites moved when the LORD commanded and stopped when the LORD commanded. As long as the cloud rested over the tabernacle, they stayed in their tents.
  19. 19When the cloud lingered over the tabernacle for many days, the Israelites obeyed the LORD's command and did not travel.
  20. 20Sometimes the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for only a few days. When the LORD commanded, they stayed in camp; when the LORD commanded, they moved on.
  21. 21Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening until morning. When it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether the cloud lifted during the day or at night, they moved whenever it rose.
  22. 22Whether the cloud remained over the tabernacle for 2 days, a month, or even a year, the Israelites stayed in camp and didn't travel. But the moment it lifted, they set out.
  23. 23They camped when the LORD commanded and traveled when the LORD commanded. They followed the LORD's instructions, given through Moses.
