- 1Then Naomi, her mother-in-law, said to her, "My daughter, shouldn't I seek rest for you, so that it may be well with you?"
- 2Now, is not Boaz our relative, with whose young women you were? Look, he will be winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor.
- 3Wash yourself, anoint yourself, put on your clothes, and go down to the threshing floor. But do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.
- 4When he lies down, note the place where he lies. Then go over, uncover his feet, and lie down there. He will tell you what to do.
- 5And she said to her, "All that you say to me I will do."
- 6So she went down to the threshing floor and did exactly what her mother-in-law had instructed.
- 7Boaz ate and drank until he was in good spirits, then went to lie down at the far end of the grain pile. Ruth crept over quietly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.
- 8At midnight, the man was afraid and turned. Look, a woman was lying at his feet.
- 9"Who are you?" he asked. She answered, "I am Ruth, your servant. Spread the corner of your garment over me, for you are a near kinsman."
- 10And he said, "Blessed be you of the LORD, my daughter. You have shown more kindness now than at the beginning, because you have not followed young men, whether poor or rich."
- 11And now, my daughter, do not be afraid; I will do for you all that you ask, for all the people of my city know that you are a virtuous woman.
- 12Now it is true that I am your near kinsman, but there is a kinsman who is nearer than I am.
- 13Stay here tonight. In the morning, if he's willing to fulfill the kinsman's duty for you, good — let him do it. But if he's not willing, then as surely as the LORD lives, I will do it myself. Now lie down until morning."
- 14She lay at his feet until morning and got up before anyone could recognize anyone else. He said, "Do not let it be known that a woman came to the threshing floor."
- 15Then he said, "Bring the vail you have on and hold it open." When she held it, he measured six measures of barley and laid it on her. Then she went into the city.
- 16When she came to her mother-in-law, she said, "Who are you, my daughter?" Then she told her everything the man had done to her.
- 17She added, "He gave me these 6 measures of barley and said, 'Don't go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.'"
- 18Then Naomi said, "Sit still, my daughter, until you know how the matter will turn out, for the man will not rest until he has finished the matter today."
