- 1In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah, son of Berechiah, son of Iddo the prophet, saying,
- 2The LORD was very displeased with your ancestors.
- 3"So tell the people this: The LORD of hosts says, 'Come back to me,' declares the LORD of hosts, 'and I will come back to you,' says the LORD of hosts."
- 4"Don't be like your ancestors. The earlier prophets pleaded with them, saying, 'The LORD of hosts says: Turn away from your evil ways and your wicked behavior.' But they refused to listen. They paid no attention to me," declares the LORD.
- 5"Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets — did they live forever?
- 6But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? And they returned and said, 'As the LORD of hosts planned to do to us, according to our ways and our deeds, so has he dealt with us.'
- 7On the 24th day of the 11th month, which is the month of Sebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah, son of Berechiah, son of Iddo the prophet, saying,
- 8During the night I had a vision. I saw a man riding a red horse, standing among the myrtle trees in a low-lying area. Behind him were red, speckled, and white horses.
- 9I asked, "My lord, what do these mean?" The angel who was speaking with me said, "I'll show you what they are."
- 10Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, "These are the ones the LORD has sent to patrol the earth."
- 11The riders reported back to the angel of the LORD standing among the myrtle trees, "We've patrolled the whole earth, and everything is calm and at peace."
- 12Then the angel of the LORD cried out, "LORD of hosts, how long will you withhold your mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah? You have had indignation against them for 70 years now!"
- 13The LORD responded to the angel who had been speaking with me, and his words were kind and full of comfort.
- 14So the angel told me, "Announce this message: The LORD of hosts says, 'I burn with fierce jealousy for Jerusalem and Zion.
- 15I am very angry with the heathen who are at ease, for I was only a little displeased, but they increased the suffering.
- 16Therefore the LORD says, 'I have returned to Jerusalem with mercies. My house will be built there,' declares the LORD of hosts, 'and a line will be stretched over Jerusalem.'
- 17Announce this as well: The LORD of hosts says, 'My cities will spread out through prosperity. The LORD will comfort Zion again and will once more choose Jerusalem.'
- 18Then I looked up and saw 4 horns.
- 19I asked the angel who was speaking with me, "What are these?" He answered, "These are the horns that scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem."
- 20Then the LORD showed me 4 craftsmen.
- 21I asked, 'What are these coming to do?' He replied, 'These are the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could lift up their head. But these have come to frighten them and to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.'
