Abram in Egypt
A Stranger in the Land · Egypt
Genesis 12:10–20
10Now a famine struck the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to stay there for a while, because the famine was severe in the land. 11As he was approaching Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, "Listen, I know that you are a beautiful woman." 12"When the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'She is his wife,' and they will kill me but let you live." 13"Please tell them you are my sister, so that things will go well for me on your account, and my soul will be spared because of you." 14When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians noticed that Sarai was extremely beautiful. 15Pharaoh's officials saw her and praised her to Pharaoh, and she was brought into Pharaoh's household. 16Pharaoh treated Abram well because of her, and Abram received sheep, oxen, male donkeys, menservants, maidservants, female donkeys, and camels. 17But the LORD struck Pharaoh and his household with terrible plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. 18Pharaoh summoned Abram and said, "What have you done to me? Why didn't you tell me she was your wife?" 19"Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her as my own wife? Here is your wife — take her and leave!" 20Pharaoh gave orders to his men regarding Abram, and they escorted him away along with his wife and everything he owned.
